Sleeping with puppy

What's so wrong about having a pup sleep in bed? Taina sleeps at night just fine in her own bed (in the laundry room) but during the day her naps are with me in bed. My husbands job makes it so he is rarely home at night and because dont like sleeping by myself i'll bring Taina to bed with me.

My husband says im spoiling her, is he right?

There is nothing wrong with a dog sleeping in bed if it's what you want. The only issues come up if the dog starts guarding the bed (dogs may guard any sleeping spots including their own bed, it just becomes an issue when it's YOUR bed because you need to get in) which can be easily prevented through positive association.


Most of the people who think dogs in the bed is bad are peple who believe in dominance theory, they think letting a dog sleep in bed makes the dog feel he's in charge, but this is not the case at all. You can still be very much in charge while your dog still sleeps in the bed. You can just teach an "off" command.

Nothing is wrong with it, if you are happy with it. My dogs are too big for sharing the bed with, plus, it means the bed gets dirtier quicker!

Lol I wash sheets weekly and Taina doesnt go outside ever, so I think dirty sheets shouldnt be a problem. If it were up to me she'd sleep all night with me but I still dont trust her enough to not pee in my bed as she cant jump off to go.

She doesn't go out? Like ever? What about walks, toileting and socialising etc?

Oh dont mean ever...lol. Right now she doesnt have all her vaccines so I limit her outings. Lately she has been getting walks along the path of our home, though Im guilty its not an everyday thing. We take her everywhere with us so she does interact with people and a few choice cats. Looks at other doggies from afar, other dogs tend to have fleas (I dont know of anyone with an inside dog).

She'd get more excercise if she had to potty outside, but as of now its not really convenient. She is still so tiny and needs a pad while I am at work. She has been holding it all night but still goes at least once (sometimes twice) while im at work.

Besides, I honestly have no clue how to get her off the pad and outside.Besides, with all the rain we get here how would I get her outside and onto the muddy grass to go potty? I'd never be able to keep her clean!

I can't stress enough how important it is for your puppy to learn - at this young age! - to walk on wet grass and mud! Trust me, whether you ever teach her to potty outside or not, it's going to be super annoying - and embarrassing - one day when you really need her to walk on a wet surface and she's scared of it because she never had to before. When she's in her socialization period, she HAS to have these important experiences!

I raised a puppy last year when we were in the middle of our worst drought in recorded history. The one time it rained while he was a puppy, I ran him outside and we played in the rain! (Luckily it happened to be warm that day, LOL.) In the beginning he was a little scared of it, but to this day he doesn't mind being out in the rain or toileting in the rain, and that's really important for the both of us.

If she gets wet, have a towel by the door to dry her with. If she gets muddy, give her a bath.

I was wondering that too Dizzy. Dogs and the outdoors go hand in hand. Espeically regarding going potty.


I have no issue with dogs in the bed. My dog sleeps in bed with me. So does my cat. I wouldn't have done it when he was younger as him and another dog I had at the time ate everything in sight. Cords, shoes, one time they did actually destroy a mattress, etc. So in my situation I had to contain them. But as he's aged he's happily just made his way onto my pillow

Personally, I would start working on your "on" and "off" commands, and sometimes, let her sleep in the crate so she is at least used to it (you don't want it to come to a point where she CANT sleep in the bed for some reason and it's an issue because she kicks a fuss being told to sleep in the crate)
