The danger with cooked bones comes from them splintering into shards, right? And this happens through chewing (i.e. bones aren't going to break down into sharp bits in the dog's stomach)?
So if a bit of cooked bone (think thin pork rib) is fed, and the ends of the bone are cut smoothly, and the piece is small enough that the dog swallows it whole, that shouldn't cause a problem... correct? |

Maybe... I never measured the size of my dog's gut connections to make sure such a cooked bone wouldn't cause an intestinal blockage. I just find it safer to assume all of them are unsafe (unless pressure cooked) and feed raw.

well he did pass a piece of rubber that was about 6x the size of the bone in question, if that is any indication.
![]() Joking aside, why do you imply that the cooked bone wouldn't be digested properly? I never knew that was an issue with them. |

Cooking changes the makeup of bones by removing collagen as I understand it. It causes them to become brittle and yeah, not as easily digestible. They tend to leave in the same condition they enter the digestive track in.
Here's a pretty good link about bones and cooking http://www.marksdailyapple.com/cooki...#axzz1kBTWwrgb

Cooked bones are completly different from raw, and I would never give them. Yes, they do splinter when cooked, and they also don't digest like raw either. Cooked is just dangerous and I wouldn't take the chance.

I was feeding him some (gross) Chinese food we got last night and he swallowed a little section of bone. It got me thinking that that should technically be OK since there were no sharp edges that could perforate a bowel when he swallowed it, as he didn't chew it (it was also a pretty soft bone to begin with)
I didn't know that they don't break down during digestion... I won't let him eat any more of them lol(and that was an interesting article Kat, thanks for posting it )

Yeah, I always assumed they were't digested like raw bones are.
As someone else mentioned, pressure cooked bones are fine, since they're nice and soft. I get a couple cans of Wing-a-ling sometimes for a treat and they LOVE the mushy wings.

Ha if I had read this thread earlier I might have done a little digging to see how that little bone was digested. I'm curious to know what happened to it. Is it completely intact, partially intact, in visible pieces, completely broken down... I want to know. As it is, I have no idea where he snuck off to do his business. Ah well.
