Unhappy A cold, snowy, bitter, cruel reminder...

That the corgis are getting older.

Only an inch of snow here and they struggled to walk through it. Last year they had no trouble bouncing around in even a foot of snow. Ares was worse than Morgan. Very noticeably sore.

I hate snow more now than I used to.

I'm with you there corgi

Last year we had record lows, lots of snow, and when the temps and snow hit us hard Phoebe (not nearly as short as your dogs of course) ran out to potty as usual with me at the back door, a quick pee and she was literally CRYING and unable to take a step, she had to be carried in the house She is no spring chicken any more and I am loathe to see what this winter brings. *sigh*

Maybe they just need some time to get used to it?

A-w-w...they do have short legs. I make trails in the snow for my Chis with the snow blower. If the snow is frozen, they stay on top and can get around. But when it's not, they too would have difficulty navigating in so much deep snow. Toker, a bigger dog can run and leap through it. But she has longer legs.

I know what you mean though about seeing the dogs, as they age have more and more trouble in the cold, snow and ice. It's hard to see.

Right now we are having a blizzard. Earlier this evening Lola needed to go out. With the 16 foot leash I have it worked out that I could be inside while she is outside. All I do is let her out, close the storm door on the leash and watch her from the inside. With snow coming down, winds blowing a constant 20mph and gusting she went out, squatted and came back inside in a matter of 30 seconds.

That was the fastest I ever saw her pee Usually on a cold night she takes her time when I am outside with her and I think she does it on purpose.

So what am I going to do in a few years when she is older?

it is hard to watch. Traveler had a hard time last winter--carrying a 70 pound dog up steps in the winter isn't easy--but that is what we did when we needed to.
Corgipower--I feel your pain, and I'm sorry. Joint supplements might help.

Thanks everyone! He's still struggling, although not as much as the snow is melting. Shoveling is very difficult for me with my back problems, but I'll have to look into doing something for the next snow fall. I think this one can just melt.

When I took him out at night and the steps were icy, I did carry him up and down the steps (which he seriously hated).

I'm going to get him an MSM supplement for Christmas.
