Default checking cats for fleas

Am I missing something????

How in the WORLD do you guys check a cat for fleas without the cat trying to take off your hand and arm? I can pet him, but if it go moving hair back looking for a flea he really lets me have it! He is the type of cat that will chase you and bite you after you have made him mad, so I want to avoid ticking him off!

Can you touch him while he's sleeping? I got lucky, even though Izzy had fleas breifly, Jade has come up clean of them! Vets will check for you if you ever take the cat to get his nails clipped or something. That's how we know Jade is flea free, they checked her when we got her spayed today.

Does he allow combing? If you can go through his coat with a fine comb (assuming he's short coated) many times if there are any, fleas or flea dirt will get caught in the loose hair.

ETA that the neck and base of the tail area seem to be popular flea spots, so you might check those first

thanks a lot. I can comb him, but only very briefly. i could do it a few times a day and see if i could find anything.

next question is how do you put spot on treatment on him? It seems like it all just gets sucked into his hair. I am not sure how much I am getting on the skin. His hair does not want to part. and if i go messing around too long trying to put that stuff on him i will have an angry kitty.
