I've been feeding Nature's Logic for more than a year now.

Recently I bought a bag of Nature's Logic Venison and as usual had sticker shock ($65.00 for 24.60 pounds)

But then I entered the information into my spreadsheet!

Over 12 months it has averaged out to less than $1.50 a day to feed Dante (80 pound 5 year old German Shepherd) - I switch protein type with each bag and the prices range from $46.99 to $64.99. I do feed some canned and some raw but not a lot, I think you can tell the months that he got more of one of those!

This makes all the difference in the world as I look at my budget.

Less than a latte
Less than a pack of cigarettes
Less than the price of most hamburgers
Less than a gallon of gas
A week’s food is less than going to a movie (Unless of course, you go to "cheap time" and sneak in all your food and beverages :lol-sign: )

Well you get the picture.

Price per bag and price per pound just don't tell you how much it's going to cost you to feed, cost per day does.

So please don't discount those great foods that you think are out of your budget, they really may not be.

The formula for the spreadsheet is simple enough - if anyone wants an actual copy of the Excel spreadsheet, let me know (Drop me an email at fillyone@hotmail.com) and I'll be happy to send you one!!

(Since I'm feeding the same food all the time now I don't list the name, just the variety. In the begining I listed the name of the food and the variety and the "protein" column was actually food)

Date Protein Lbs per Bag Price $ per Pound # Days per bag $ Per Day
08/15/08 Chicken 24.60 $41.99 $1.71 45 $1.11
09/29/08 Lamb 24.60 $49.99 $2.03 35 $1.43
11/03/08 Lamb 24.60 $51.99 $2.11 39 $1.33
12/12/08 Venison 24.60 $64.99 $2.64 40 $1.62
01/21/09 Chicken 24.60 $46.99 $1.91 40 $1.17
03/02/09 Lamb 24.60 $52.99 $2.15 39 $1.36
04/10/09 Lamb 24.60 $52.99 $2.15 40 $1.32
05/20/09 Venison 24.60 $64.99 $2.64 35 $1.86
06/24/09 Chicken 24.60 $46.99 $1.91 26 $1.81
07/20/09 Lamb 24.60 $52.99 $2.15 34 $1.56
08/23/09 Beef 24.60 $46.99 $1.91 33 $1.42
09/25/09 Venison 24.60 $64.99 $2.64 37 $1.76

He is eating two cups a day

Do some dogs lose weight on more protein? When I used to feed raw, and one of the reasons that i stopped was that Ruckus lost a lot of weight and we could not get him to gain any on raw.

How long does it take to see improvement when you switch to a better dog food. Both of my dogs are on grain free now. Lynn has always been.

Ruckus has done better on Iams healthy naturals than he has anything i have tried! I have tried many holistic natural foods, etc with him. even raw. Well, I thought he was doing great on Iams, and all of a sudden he is getting thin hair, skin rash, and a bit smelly. I am not sure its the food, since he has skin allergies to grass, and in the fall his allergies get bad. but I am thinking its too grain heavy or something.

Do you see anything that might be upsetting his skin? He has never ate corn before, until Iams.

Chicken, Chicken By-Product Meal, Brewer's Rice, Corn Meal, Ground Whole Grain Sorghum, Ground Whole Grain Barley, Chicken Fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Dried Beet Pulp (sugar removed), Natural Chicken Flavor, Dried Egg Product, Brewer's Dried Yeast, Dicalcium Phosphate, Potassium Chloride, Salt, Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, Beta-Carotene, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin A Acetate, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate (source of Vitamin B1), Niacin, Riboflavin Supplement (source of Vitamin B2), Inositol, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (source of Vitamin B6), Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid), Fish Oil (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Flax Meal, Apple Pomace, Dried Carrots, Dried Peas, Choline Chloride, Dried Spinach, Dried Tomato, Minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Potassium Iodide, Cobalt Carbonate), L-Carnitine, Rosemary Extract

I have had Ruckus on TOTW pacific stream before and his poop stayed nasty, runny, mucus like! So I got him wetlands and his stool is looking great. He has been on it for two weeks now.

This has been bothering me. I bought the girls a new bag of Eagle Pack a while back and told the lady working at the feed store I was looking into new brands. Beau really does best on Eagle Pack or Fromm (weak stomach) but Summer has always been wonderful on EVO. So I asked about switching back to EVO and the lady said no way for a small breed puppy (Mia was 6 months). I am just wondering WHY?

Also, the girls are doing well on Eagle Pack but it's got more grains than I would like. Would you leave it be or try something else? It'd be great if I could get something they sold at petco because it's so much closer to me than the feed store. I think they sell Wellness at petco now.

Hello,

My sister has an 8.5 month poodle-golden retriever mix. He has been on Purina One Large Breed puppy since they got him, but they are switching him to an adult food since he was just neutered, and would like to switch to a higher quality food while they are at it. I referred her to the Dog Food Project website, but she found it a little overwhelming, and wanted a list of recommendations instead. I know this has been discussed before, but I was wondering if you could throw out some brands you like? Also, would foods with high protein contents cause problems at his age? So far I have:
Kirkland Chicken and Rice (I use it for my two because of cost constraints, but she may be able to spend more than me)
Innova
California Natural
Canidae
Blue Buffalo
Thanks in advance!

I figured I could make a thread where people can post proven recipes (for whole meals, treats, whatever) they use and ask questions about others they've been told about,

I got this recipe from the guy I was asking about here (http://www.chazhound.com/forums/t106707/).
A few people told me to stay away from it due to his scam-like site, but what about his actual recipes?

Here's one of them:
"Terrier tuna, egg & cheese supreme"
Ingredients -
1 can flaked tuna in oil, undrained
2 eggs
1 c. whole meal breadcrumbs
1/4 c. grated cheese
Total of 1042 calories

Instructions -
1. Scramble eggs over low heat
2. Add tuna in oil and breadcrumbs and stir together.
3. Melt cheese over mixture
4. Serve cooled

So what do you guys think?
