This is research represents a big shift in cancer research for dogs and humans. Dogs are becoming a focus for modeling human cancer since they are very close to us genetically. I like this type of research because it does not involve inducing cancer in lab animals artificially. Humans don't get cancer that way, and neither do pet dogs so it makes more sense to study the real thing scientifically and it is more humane. They will also be using cancer treatment trial data more from dogs for a model of human treatments. Once again, the dogs in these studies will be pets that have acquired cancer naturally and need treatment of some kind.
This study focused on Golden Retrievers.
Just something from the opposite side. I am somewhere more along the middle. While I don't think it's damaging to have an early s/n I do reccommend it for novice pet people. I myself don't like dealing with girls in season, but I left both of my two intact until well over two yrs old

I just got pet insurance for Batman earlier this year because a friend recommended I do since he was a puppy, and puppies tend to be get sick easier and rack up some bills. I ended up signing up with Trupanion pet Insurance and they've been great. I chose my own deductible, they pay 90% of the bill, and they cover hereditary problems! awesomeO! :) I already had to make a claim not long ago and it definitely made it less stressful on my wallet. Worth looking into i think if you have a puppy or a dog breed that is more prone to getting sick....

Anyone else have experience, comments, advice, questions, concerns, about pet insurnace or companies they are with?

Okay, so this is the kind of post someone makes during their first visit to a forum and then everyone tells them they are so dumb they shouldnt own a dog at all (yes I am exaggerating).

Chloe is 7 and 1/2 months and her vulva was very swollen a few days ago, it has since gone down and there were no other signs of a heat, no blood or anything... so this wasnt a heat then right? or can a heat be this minor?

I have never seen a dog in heat before  How do I own an intact female and I am not capable of knowing what a heat it? Is it the kind of thing that once it happens you will just know?

Any insight would be useful I feel totally unqualified to own a dog.

Poor Hutch, our Saint, has facial nerve paralysis. He has lost muscle coordination on the left side of his face. I immediately thought that he had suffered from a stroke, but usually this is not the case. Most cases of this are idiopathic, but we do have to rule out the other causes. We will know more tomorrow evening after an apointment with his regular vet. So any good vibes that can be sent would be appreciated!!

The poor fellow, he already is a drooly guy, but now his left side jowel is even worse and he has a constant drip coming from his mouth. He is unable to blink his left eye, so we have to place drops in to prevent corneal damage. And he only has expressive motion in his right ear, his left ear just hangs limp. He did suffer some trauma from a gallop straight into a tree that could be the cause. We will rule this out with x-rays. He had a case of the zoomies and looked behind to see if the other 2 dogs were still chasing him and he ran into the tree. If this is the case he may regain some motion once the inflamation resolves. We also have to rule out inner ear infections, tumors, etc. Right now this seems to be the only symptom. He is still active, eating well, etc.

This is the first time that I have thought about his age, and how he is no longer a pup. He is only 6, but they have an average lifespan of 8-10. My poor boy, I can't imagine what I will do if it is anything too serious.

Last night my husband got up to go to the bathroom and did realize my 7 week old Shih Tzu was on the ground in his path. We think he stepped on her head but he's not sure. She didn't cry out but he picked her up and her head and neck were tilting to one side and she wouldn't stand up. We rushed her to the emergency vet at 2 a.m. where she is now. They did an x-ray and checked her pupils. They were fine. After 12 hours under observation, she can move her legs, hold her bladder and bowels and stands briefly or walks a step or two but very wobbly. Her head is still tilted over though she can move it and straighten it out but it always goes back to the side tilt. She just wants to lay down.

They gave her medication to reduce fluid on the brain and are keeping her hydrated with a glucose IV. So far, they are just keeping her under observation.

I'm so scared and devastated by this. I went to visit her this morning and she whimpered sadly when I held her like she usually does when she's tired or wants me to pick her up. I just held her for an hour and tried to talk sweetly and calmly to her.

I feel like I let her down. She's just a baby and there's nothing I can do for her but wait... The vet said they are "guardedly optimistic." Has anyone had a similar thing happen and have their puppy rebound?

So... Morgan was scratching an itch and started crying. I went to take a look and found that the inside of his ear is scratched raw. I have no idea when this happened!

Since it's almost 10pm here, running to the vet isn't really an option, though I don't think it's quite bad enough to warrant that a this point, anyways. Is there something I can put on his sore ear in the meantime? Neosporin? Bactine? Anything?

At the very least, I think he's going to get a bath tonight, in case he's just itching from being dirty. I doubt it's a food thing, since he's been on the same food for 18 months, though I suppose it's still possible...

My poor buddy just can't seem to get a break. :( Last week he was sick and mopey, and now his ear hurts. I know there are much worse things I could be dealing with, and I'm thankful that it's just these "little" problems, but it still makes me so sad to see Morgan so unhappy.

His stools have been regular, he is acting normal, he doesn't appear to be sick in any way.....he just licks and licks and licks and it's kind of turning red by the time he stops. We're planning on taking him to the vet soon for a check up anyways, but anyone know why he may have started to do this all of a sudden? can it be worms of any sort? or bug bite? hmmm ... it's been a week almost and we can't get him into our vet until tuesday
