By anticipating them having to go so they didn't get the chance to go in the house. If they did go in the house and I caught them in the act (which I almost always did because I never let a little pup out of my sight!) I would say UHUHUHUH, clap my hands and scoop them up and go outside. Then I would clean the spot with some white vinegar and water while the pup was elsewhere. Everytime they went outside I would say go potty...as soon as they started going...GOOOOOOD DOOOG!!! GO POTTY! Good!. Gunnar will now go on command, even if he doesn't have to go he will "squat" for me.

When you catch him in the act does he stop immediatly. I usually go "Bad dog" when he's in the act, but don't pick him up cuz it gets all over the place

Ya he usually did because I startled the heck out of him with all my loudness. Try to really startle him and get his attention, he'll be to busy going "what the heck is going on" to continue peeing. There were a few times when he was older and he would start peeing and beeline for the door, whizzing all the way. That was pretty frustrating, but he almost had it down so we just continued with doing what we had been. Gunnar was trained in about three weeks time.
It took me three months to completely potty train my two boys  I almost never caught them in the act; they went as soon as I was out of the room. I just praised them like crazy when they went outside, and they got the idea. I still praise them, even though they are nine months old now LOL.
