View Full Version : Overactive Bladder, or under socialized???
I have an odd question: I took Beethoven to the vet on the 5th of August. He behaved really well; didn't bark (until he saw a German Shepherd that was much bigger than him  He stood right in front of me and protected me, though :D ), didn't jump around, and didn't tug on the leash. (I really am not trying to brag!) However, when the vet tech came around the corner, and started saying his name and talking to him, he peed all over the floor  . He ran up to her to have his head scratched, so he didn't seem to be afraid of her. He had no problem letting the vet or the techs pet him, give him his shots, etc. I can't tell if he is undersocialized, or if he just got overexcited? He has met new people almost everyday since he was 7 weeks old. LOL The vet actually asked me if he was housebroken  . Any input?
It could just be excitement or a combo of excitment and nerves. I'm sure your dog was picking up on nervous/fear smells from other dogs--vet offices just are not comfortable places.
When parents come to get their dogs after being boarded, we know with some dogs to just keep a mop and bucket handy because the dog will pee. We know, and they know, the dog is housebroken. It just happens sometimes.

He may be just quite a submissive dog in that when he meets new people, he is acknowledging that they too are his "leaders." He is saying, I like you and I'm here to do what you want of me. LOL. If he's been around lots of people all this time and he is running right up for affection, I don't think he's undersocialized. Don't make any kind of issue out of it and he'll probably grow out of it as he becomes more confident. Do you work with him a little every day on training? That will build his confidence if you use positive methods. Also little games of tug of war and let him win will make him feel more confident. He just needs a little more of that mixed in with his sweetness.
LOL As long as he's not undersocialized, I'm happy :) He is a very submissive dog; if my body posture is stiff, he lays down at my feet and shows me his belly. (He's never been hit).
Doberluv, I do work with him on training daily. He loves it; he's very obediant. I'm very happy with the dog he's turned into.
He has always been a "peer", ever since he was tiny. I've never even acknowledged it; I was just worried that he may need more socialization.
Thanks!!! :D

Well, socialization should continue all their lives. The more experiences which are pleasant, the better. He may be a little nervous indeed. Look up online...do a search on confidence building in dogs...something like that. See if they have some more games and things you can do to increase that. I think that would help too. Good luck.
Oh, I know that socialization needs to continue all throughout the dog's life...I'll definatley search online, and see what I come up with :D Thanks for your input guys!
