I've just been to a sight where the administrator recommended putting a prong collar on a terrrified six week old puppy.
" When you are able to supervise, keep her in a prong collar and lead at all times so that you can correct her when necessary. If you aren't familiar with prongs, the collar must fit high on the dog's neck behind the ears and be very snug. For more info. enter prong collars, pinch collars or fitting prong collars in the forum's search."
It makes me sick. They also actively campaign against positive methods, have absolutely no clue as to how they work, and I'm sure they have ruined countless pups with such awful and ignorant advise. It makes me so mad :mad:

Well, a spike collor is mean but they will understand when they are wrong. But I think you should train your dog with love. By giving it pets and love when it does rigt and to only verbally disapline it. The dog will be sweeter and love you more.

Well, I dont think a six week old puppy needs to be painfully shown when it does something the owner perceives as wrong.

Oh gosh! That makes me sick! Did you try and counteract this b.s? How dreadful to do that to a tiny puppy.
I'm sorry, there is not one single reason in the world why a six-week old puppy needs a prong collar. Or a choke chain, or even a martingale collar. A simple nylon one should do just dandy.

I gave my humble opinion, the sight said they don't advocate any kind of positive training and said "I think its stoopid to watch positive trainers jam treats into their halter laden dogs whilst clicking away like mad".
The site has banned quite a few people for having something even slightly intelligent to say.

Shame the site can't be banned, I pity any dogs that come into contact with the people that wrote that statement.

That people should be made to have an IQ test before having anything to do with dogs.........to prove they are smarter than the dogs!!!!
Heck, I always taught my young Dobe pups while I was sitting and watching TV and they were there in front of me. I would slide my foot over and move their back feet under them and tell them SIT just as their butts touched the ground. They thought they were just the smartest little pups on the face of the earth, lol. You can't do that with Manchester pups tho 'cause they just end up sitting on your foot and riding it around, lol.

that is horrible. the pup is only 6 weeks old!! what on earth could the pup be doing at that age that they would even suggest a prong? having patience and an understanding of dog behavior could probably solve whats going on.
Its really not even about shoving treats down his throat like they said but more about ummm dont know how to put it into words lazy maybe? they will get results with the prong but hes way to young and it will affect his view of people if you ask me.
I always thought the prong was used to correct a behavior already learned...not to be used to make a behavior...???
dont get me wrong Im not against the use of a prong when used fairly (not abused) but not on a pup that young.
what site was that on? I belong to a few forums and have never come across a response like that.

Ohh dont get me started on prong collars
OMG! I want to cry now....I have gotten into arguements with people over prong collars, which I don't personally believe in.
If they need to put a prong collar on that pup, they shouldn't have it in the first place. Oh, and I'd like to know how exactly they're going to correct her with the collar, if it's on when they aren't supervising???? Geez....
