teaching freeze

How can I teach my puppy to know the "freeze" command. Where he stays absolutely still in sit command, and/or while standing? He always sits when we do our training, so it's really hard to get him to stand.

I taught my kelpie freeze, though it isn't much different to the stay command, and I have only taught it to her because she did it naturally much of the time (sheepdog).

LOL! Those sheep dogs are soooo cool how they do that.

Lyric learned "naturally" too because he had to hold VERY still when I was posting his cropped ears. I'd say, "hold it." And now I can tell him, "hold it" for lots of things and he knows he should hold very still. Such a smart boy. LOL.

Take him up there. He will learn to freeze in a matter of seconds, rofl.

Freeze is too long a word. Stop is better because you can "hit" them with the "P" sound. I had old fartyblossom trained so he would stop in mid heeling and stand till I called him to catch up, or drop to the ground during heeling and stay there till I called him to catch up. So it can be done. It was the drop on command that saved his life one day.

I used to say "freeeeezzzzee" really lowly and draw out the word, and my kelpie would stop with her paw in the air and her eyes wide with anticipation of whatever it was I was going to get her to do next, which was usually "ok, catch those birdies!". She tries to herd ducks, sparrows, pigeons. Its a good way to practice for real herding though.
