Puppy shots question

I went to the vet today to get Tips his 3rd set of shots. He's 14 weeks now. He got his first shots at 7 weeks, then more at 11 weeks.

The vet told me to come back in 2 weeks for more... Were pups not supposed to have only 3 sets? She told me that puppies need to have the last set at 4 months, then they are fully immunized?

I'm really confused... I thought this was the last set and then I would be able to finally take Tips out in 10 days :(

Can anyone enlighten me?

Mmmm sorry I cant help, here in the UK a puppy only has two vaccinations, hopefully someone else may help

A pup should be shot at 4 months (16 weeks), 6 months and age 1 year. After that you can use whatever protocol you wish, such as every 3 years.

And not especially informative. It is know that maternal immunities wane at 14 weeks of age, but it cannot be 100% counted upon, which is why another shot is given at 6 months of age. The only reason for the bi-weekly shots is because the shots are actually doing no good because maternal immunity blocks them. This of course assumes the b!tch is up to date on HER shots. So the hope is that by shooting every two weeks to 16 weeks of age the pup will be covered no matter what.

So even though your pup has had three sets, your vet wants the last set at 16 weeks.

So I have always done the last shot at 16 weeks then a booster every year for two years, then boosters at 2-3 year intervals.

So, I would have it done at 16 weeks, also

I guess another at 6 months would be more protection, but have never done that.????

He is 14 weeks. He needs the last poopie puppy shot at 16 weeks...that is two weeks from now, right? That is why the vet wants you to go back. I give my shots (or did when I was breeding at 9 weeks, 12 weeks, 15 weeks, and 6 months. But what the protocols don't tell you is that Toy breeds are different. Also never give Lepto to a puppy. It can very well kill them. Especially pups of the toy breeds. Most of us don't even give it to adult dogs because it does not good. There are at least 28 strains of Lepto, and there is no cross protection.

Puppies have 4 combo vaccines if you start at 6 or 7 weeks old. They need their last shot at around 4 months. If you start the series later than they olnly need 3.

Ok, thanks for the info. Keep in mind though that he was seperated from his mom at 6 weeks, so the antibodies probably didn't last so long?

In any case, I guess I'll have to wait 3 more weeks :( I'm just worried he's going to be much harder to socialize by then :(

The immunities are acquired within the first 24 hours of nursing, via the cholostrum (spelling??????)

I reread my posts, but I am so pooped, lol. I know I was getting confused thinking 14 weeks= 4 months, rofl. Anyway, the puppy needs a shot at 16 weeks of age!!!! The vet does know what he/she is talking about.

I wanted to be sure the pups were protected against Parvo. I was one of the unfortunates who was breeding back before there was a vaccine against parvo, and all we had to use was the Feline Parainfluenza shot. I watched a whole lot of pups die, one by one. So, price of $2, I would rather err on the side of caution.

you might not find it very informative, but i do, and so do many other people who are quite confused about the issue.

The one thing vets do know about is puppy shots.

let's change that to "most vets", certainly not all do, and many still follow old, outdated protocols. that aside, the presentation i linked to was created by a vet (as you can see in the copyright notice), and one who has made a name for himself in regards to pet vaccinations.

for those who are interested, he also has some interesting material on his other site, www.critteradvocacy.org, but it has been up and down like a yoyo recently, so just keep trying. :)
