Hi all, just wanted to make anyone that uses frontline plus, aware of what happened to me today.

I order all my flea meds on line, well I was notified my order could not be filled because Merial, the makers of frontline has pulled them off the shelf and will now only sell their products directly thru vets.

The person on the phone reccommended Advantax, does anyone know safety concerns, and effectiveness of it?

I told her I would do some research on what to change to, and would reorder later.

There could be some in stock somewhere, but she said after that no more?????

Did anyone else hear about this??

Julie.

Now that just blows . . . the Advantage just doesn't work very well on my dogs, for whatever reason, and the Frontline Plus is three times the cost at the vets compared to what I'm buying it for online. Maybe if enough people stop using Frontline if they can't order online Merial will be forced to rethink this.

It does blow....big time. Much cheaper to buy online.

Yea, Im hoping the lady I talked to is mixed up...or something.

I have used advantage too, and frontline works much better for me too.

This lady reccommended Advantix (sp?). Do you have info. on that?

Julie.

I just did a search Advantix is made by Bayer, It contains imidacloprid and permethrin.

I have never used permethrin on my dogs, I heard it was dangerous for them.

???
What do you all use?

I just talked to Merial. Officially, they have never sold Frontline through any conduits other than licensed vets. That's their story and they're sticking to it.

So . . . the way that works, is the online sites we've been ordering from all have a vet involved who is doing the product acquisition. There shouldn't be any problem unless ALL the vets who are involved with website sales decide to cut off a very lucrative source of income . . . I kind of doubt we'll be having a problem getting Frontline.

Some people swear by the Advantage. It has almost no effect on my dogs though. I think what makes the difference is the method of distribution over your dog's body. Frontline gets distributed more thoroughly on some types of skin, Advantage on others.

The Advantix is something I've never looked at since I've gotten good results with Frontline.

And I would never use a systemic flea product. I just don't like the idea of putting pesticides INSIDE my dog.

Well, thats good to know. I guess.

Where do you order from?
I always ordered from Omaha Vaccine, I believe they are partnership with Pet Supples Delivered.

I need to order some ASAP, It has been about six weeks since last application, and I don't want to let it go any longer. :D

Thanks,
Julie.

My vets recommend K9 Advantix .......works for me.

Advantix is very safe and generally very effective as well. The main active ingredient in the Advantage products works only on the central nervouse system of the flea and therefore is very safe for humans and pets. On the other had, Advantix has an added ingredient that is lethal to cats but not dogs. Advantix should never be used on cats and if your cats cuddle with your dogs or groom them then Advantix is a no no! I like Advantix because unlike Frontline it kills fleas, ticks and misquitos. I have had very good luck with the Advantage products and they are faster than Frontline at killing fleas. When I worked in the vet clinic Advantage and Advantix were much preferred over Frontline or Frontline Plus.

For me personally I like Frontline plus, and feel it is the safest product. It works the best for me and has done well on my "water" dogs. Where they like to spend lots of time. Frontline plus is waterproof.

The reason I would not like to try Advantix, is because it contains permethrin;
Which is an insectiside, not a growth regulator or such.
That is the ingredient harmful/fatal to cats.

Anyway, I just went to another company and made an order for frontline plus.
I can't wait to see if it is in stock....

Thanks to all,
Julie.

I get my Frontline Plus from EntirelyPets.com - it the least expensive when I did some searches, and since I buy over $100 of the stuff at a time the shipping was free.

Advantage and Advantix are waterproof as well. I hear you on the pyrethrin isssue though. I have always felt that Advantage was safer because it was approved for puppies as young as 7 weeks while you can't use Frontline until the puppy is 12 weeks.

Oh, I didn't know advantage was waterproof. I never saw it stated in the information I have read. I just figured it wasn't because it never worked that great for my swimmers.

Thanks for the info.

Frontline can be used as young as 8 weeks.

advantage isn't waterproof. it's water resistant, but doesn't hold up as well as frontline when the dog gets wet.

that being said, i have never had good luck with frontline, advantage has always worked better for me. i've been using it for about 15 years.

anyone who wants to use advantix: be aware that it is toxic for cats, and do not apply it to a dog that freqyently comes into close contact with cats.

Two things to add to this conversation:

To Renee750, try discountpetsdrugs.com - prices there are slightly cheaper for Frontline Plus.

Secondly, I ordered Frontline on Thursday from the above site, and it's shipped. So you might want to try there.
