What food was he being fed? Sometimes a change in quality (up) can really help with odor. Nanook was really stinky when we got her but now she's ok. And she's never had a bath with us either.

right now u can only see a wet spot and he wont let me pull the hair back. he will rowl and i am afraid he will bite. i have only had him since yesterday....i'll try o take a pic anyways. i dont think it's gonna be much of a help though..can u tell me what a hot spot is please?

and saje, he was fed purina dog chow. which i am still giving him today, i am going to the vet tomorow and then to the dog shop to buy diff brand of food. probably innova evo..if thats any good. if he is between 5-8 yrs old, should i give him senior food or not? because he is still very skinny...so i think i want him to have enough fats in his diet

a hot spot is a skin irritation, caused by bacteria, some dogs get them from allergies (my first gsd had them like crazy, vet tested for allergies and gave us pills to give him. that helped a lot), strider got one from swimming in the bayou, didnt get him home to wash him off fast enough, next morning he had a wet, open, stinky sore under his fur. does it smell like stinky feet?? if its a hot spot the vet will shave it, give him a couple of shots, and give you some antibiotic pills. hot spots are quite painfull, so not suprised he doesnt want it touched. take him to the vet soon, I've seen pictures of dogs whos owners didnt notice a hot spot for several days (they can grow really fast, striders doubled in size in an hour) and the whole chest was a big oozing sore.

IMO Innova EVO is the best thing you could do for him. I think he would respond really well to that.

Good for you luvmydogs. Just tell them to do a complete check over and do whatever is needed. It will run your bill up quick, but it is best to get everything taken care of at once. Best of luck to Magnum and family!

PS. You say he has an ear infection, what you are smelling is probably yeast. Yeast is very foul smelling and it won't go away until his ear is cleaned properly.

You'll want to read up on yeast. I can't remember if Mordy has anything at her site on it or not - information overload, lol! Linda Arndt has some good info at www.greatdanelady.com, but be sure to check Mordy first - she's the gold standard!

I'm not at all saying that his health might not be a factor but food can definitely play a role. So take care of his ears and his hot spot or whatever it turns into. BUT you may find this page on Mordy's site interesting. Especially the section on "I've always fed my dog..." It's my fave http://www.mordanna.com/dogfood/index.php?page=myths

We'll be worrying about Magnum right along with you. It's probably an injury of some sort since it's the only sore spot. If the vet puts him on antibiotics, though, you'll really have to start attacking the yeast, as the antibiotics will also kill off more of the beneficial bacteria in his system that he needs to put down a yeast infection. Anytime I have to give antibiotics I try to feed yoghurt (with active cultures) and give some probiotics to counteract the potential for yeast.
