Pooing in crate

I've had my dog for only 5 days, but he has pooed in his crate multiple times. He does have diarrhea, but he still seems to let it out just when he wants to. Crating is pretty much my only option because I know beagles can be destructive when left alone. Sometimes he sleeps okay in it but I will wake up to find he has used the bathroom inside. Is it too early to draw conclusions?

A lot of blood in stool too! I am taking him to the vet and if she determines it to be unhealthy I may contact my breeder to get another dog.. What do you guys think?

Does he pee in it too? It's extremely hard to hold when you have diarrhea (even for us, lol), so I would try to fix that problem before drawing conclusions.

Poor pup...he probably can't help it if he has diarrhea. I think it's pretty common to have it when they are puppies. I know my cat had it sooo bad when she was a baby. I had to take her to the vet for an overnight stay. She was too dehydrated and they said she would have died if I didn't bring her in. Make sure you keep an eye on that. If there is blood in the stool, I'd call either the breeder or the vet. That doesn't sound good.

I'm glad you're taking the puppy to the vet today. If the puppy is unheathly, you'll have to make the decision if the vet can give you medication to cure what's wrong or if it's something more serious and you can't afford the expenses. I would let the breeder know either way what is happening to your puppy. Please tell us what happened at the vet today.

His fecal exam was negative, but very bloody. He has lost 1.4 pounds (from 9.8 to 8.4) in the course of 4 days. The breeder thinks it may just be stress but I am very concerned, especially after the loss of my beagle last month, that I may return the puppy and get an older dog. Breeder says I can do that so I may opt to do it soon.

Is that all the vet said to you that it was negative, nothing else? I know I'd be worried if my dog had very bloody stool.

Well I contacted the breeder and she told me that his littermate was diagnosed with Giardia so she willingly took my pup back. I just dropped him off and sad as I am, I'm glad that she took the responsibility to take him back and provide me with numerous options. During the time I returned him I spoke about how I panicked I was because I lost my dog last month and went through numerous procedures at the vet. When I saw how bloody his stool was today and took him, I started to tremble because I was still not fully recovered from my dog's death.. brought back a lot of horrid memories. She sympathized completely and told me it sounded like I needed some more time to really accept my dog's death and mourn before buying another dog and trying to ease the pain that way.
I will do so. Thank everyone for your help. An awesome bunch of people on this forum.

I would say GO GET YOUR PUPPY BACK!!!!!!! RIGHT NOW! Just have the breeder pay for the pills. It will only take 3 days for the pup to be good as new!!!!!!!! Giardia is present in dogs' digestive systems normally in very small numbers. Stress will allow the creatures to multiply at a faster rate. Coccidia is another protazoan (sp) that may be present. But your pup will be fine. There really was no reason to return him.....the breeder should have just arranged for you to get some Flagyl from her vet! I had to do that once with a litter of Manchester pups. As they say, "POOP happens" (pun intended.)

I personally am glad you took the pup back , but maybe you can check with the breeder in a week to 10 days and see how he's doing. If he's healthy and happy, maybe you can take him back.

Giardia is no big deal if diagnosed and treatment started before the dog gets too far down from dehydration. Three days on the pills, and voila! a healthy dog again. And of course it helps to give pedilyte also for several days. Keep the electrolytes in balance till the loose stool firms up.

I know this is horribly upsetting to anyone new to the situation. Just keep you chin up. Things will work for the best. It is no bad reflection on the breeder that this happened. The pups could have been weaned too young or taken away from the mother before 10 weeks of age.
