Hey everyone,
As I posted before, Bear started having trouble controlling bladder and bowels and I'm sure its due to being on Prednisone (for chronic bronchitis). I wanted to talk to my vet BUT was unable to. He was closed Wedenesday, Thursday I called and told his assistant what was happening and she said when I brought Murray in for his appt, which was today, we could talk about Bear. Well, my vet was in a hurry as he was going out of town and he left the room before I could bring up Bear, and when I told his assistant that I needed to talk to him, she said "sorry, he's in surgery now and then he's going out of town until 8-8-05". I was not very happy and I told her so, she said she'd have the vet call me when he got out of surgery - and he never did.

So anyway, I want to taper Bear off this stuff. I'd rather have him cough than be in kidney failure. I was giving him 10 mg on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Any suggestions on how to get him off of it slowly? I just want to make sure I do it right. I don't want to have to wait for my vet to come back.

Well, my vet DID call back! :D I thought he'd already left for out of town, but he agreed that Bear should go off the Prednisone. Since he takes it 3/week now, we're going to take it down to 2/week for a couple of weeks, then 1/week for a couple of weeks and then none.

Yeah! Rene - I know how you feel about Prednisone and I'm so glad Bear will be getting off it now!! :)

I'm glad you waited for your vet to contact you. My dog was on it as well and you have to taper it off SLOWLY or the sicknesses you were treating it for can come back instantly. Hope everything works out and let us know what happens.

Nicco,
Is it short term or long term? What is she taking it for? I've learned that Prednisone is not always the answer.

Nicco, I'm sorry to hear that your dog has gangliotic cancer. What is the prognosis?
