In a situation where a dog comes to you that is obviously not being cared for properly (ie. abuse or neglect) do you have a policy of what you do in this situation?

Just recently where I work we had a dog come in that almost had us in tears. She came to us BLEEDING as the matting had become so bad it was ripping off her ears, her skin was badly scabbed, she was infested with fleas, her body was sagging and used from countless litters of puppies, etc etc. We realised there was very little we actually COULD do to help this little girl. What about you?

Call in a report to AC? That sounds like a pretty clear case of neglect to me.

I would tell them to come back at closing time, and the second they were out the door I would call AC and tell them to COME LOOK AT THE DOG.

Pretty much what we were told is because they've made steps (by taking the dog for grooming) there's nothing that can be done at this time.

Makes me SO ANGRY.

We do have all their information, and have reported the case to AC here, telling them the dog NEEDS to be checked out in her own environment asap.

At least they brought the poor dog in !!!! I had a dog living like that next to me a few years ago . They didn't do anything " Because she was dying from Heart Worms anyway !" AC was called , but because the dog was fed and watered , there was nothing they could do ! It broke my heart !

Ditto^^^^ Here in Calgary, the dog would be taken away from them, cared for and rehomed for sure. Inexcuseable.

Did you already groom her and shave her?

I doubt the shelter will do anything if there's no proof of her condition before she was groomed.

Do you have pictures?

We did take pictures, but did groom her and shave her. There was no way we could forgive ourselves leaving her in that condition.

Pictures and info have been passed on to the Humane Society, what happens now is up to them :(

That is the best thing to do. Taking a before and after picture, keeping the matted hair as evidence and writing down as much info you can and dating it then passing it to HS.

Poor dog, you did well in grooming her. I hope that HS can do something about it. Keep us informed if you find out anything.
