View Full Version : Hannah is sick

Ok, today I noticed Hannah isn't feeling well at all  ! She goes outside to "do her business" about every ten minutes. She has extremely watery poop, basically that is all it is...water. What could be causing this? She's had all of her vacinations. She did eat a compressed rawhide (i think that's what they are called) today and yesterday as well. Could she have gotten this sick from those? She also did a little garbage digging last night and got into the uneaten dog food from the morning. I just don't know if it could be the rawhide or the old dog food, or a combination. She is still being playful but you can just tell her tummy is not right at all. Is there anything that I can do to help her tummy feel better?

Hmmmm . . . . I'm betting it's the rawhide. Try just feeding her some rice cooked in chicken broth with maybe a little cooked white meat from a chicken.
Does her tummy look distended, like she's gassy? If that's the case, you can use a Phazyme (simethicone gas relief) gel cap. I've had to use those on Shiva twice and sat and patted her sides until she belched. I made such a big fuss over her belching - I was that relieved - that now when she feels a burp coming on she walks over to me and does it in my face
Check out the first aid kit thread and see what it says there about what else you can use for a sore tummy.
Oh, and you might want to give her some canned pumpkin. Watery diarrhea can be from an obstuction (like rawhide) and the canned pumpkin will help move it all properly.

her tummy doesn't look any different at all. I'll try the rice and everything for her dinner and see if that will help. Can I pick up pumpkin from any store? It has to be plain right? Is there any certain brand. I didn't give her the rawhide though, the neighbors were giving it to the dogs when they were outside. I told them not to (just for this reason) but they did it agian today anyway. I hope maybe they didn't poison it or something. I don't think they would because they like animals so I don't think they would do something like that.

I didn't think you usually gave rawhide, Julie. This will be something you can tell your neighbors though, that they made Hannah sick with the stuff!
You should be able to get the pumpkin at any grocery - yes, you make sure it's the plain canned pumpkin, not pumpkin pie filling.
And I was checking the first aid thread and saw where Grammy used Pepto Bismol tablets for her dogs, so you might pick up a package.
How is our Shelby doing?

she's doing ok. She doesn't eat rawhide, she's too good for it. We got bad news back from the vet so I'm still sort of cooping with it. I haven't posted about it yet because I'm taking her to a vet in Illinois to get a second opinion.

Gotcha. When is your appointment?

it's not until August 5th. I won't know much until then though. Our vet now says that she isn't cancer free though and so I want to talk to this other vet and see what he has to say. I'm worried for her, I'm hoping that our vet just doesn't know what he's talking about but he's never been wrong yet.

Sorry Julie you're going through 2 problems . Some dogs pick up the vibes of their sibs ... she may be worried about Shelby ... yes , do give some pepto and keep us posted !!!

I pciked her up some of the canned pumpkin but she wouldn't touch it. I gave her a little pepto and she is resting agian. She's been a little snuggle bug all day (which is how I know she's not feeling well). She will play for liek half an hour or so every couple hours but it's not as rambunctous as she will usually play.

Julie, get some of the Essiac tea and get it into Shelby two or three times a day. It won't hurt at all, and I've seen it do some amazing things.

yeah I give that to her, I've been giving it to her since she's come home from the vets. I only gave it to her once a day though, I'll just up the amount that she gets for a day then. Thanks!

Good! I couldn't remember if I'd told you about it or not :)

yeah you did and I got it for her when I brought her home from the clinic and I've been giving it to her once a day since. I'll give it to her more though. It just sucks that I thought she'd be ok. I don't think it's too bad though, maybe with some more chemo we can beat it! I'm still enthusiastic about winning, if she doesn't give up I won't either!

That's the spirit, Julie! You know when you've got a dog who has that desire to live and the will to survive and you've just got to give them the chance to fight. They're amazing, miraculous creatures.
Shelby is just sooo beautiful.

Julie, I hope Hannah is feeling better today.
I also want to say I really hope Shelby pulls through this. We're all behind her and want to see her well again.

Hannah seems better this morning. Although she hasn't really been outside to do her business yet. Atleast she's not going out every ten minutes like yesterday. I think the pepto really helped her tummy though, she wouldn't touch the pumpkin.

I used boiled chicken and rice with Boris when he had diarrhea. It helped a lot, and he loved it.

yeah I'm gonna do that for her today when she gets her food. I'm gonna try the pumpkin agian too.

well she ate half a can of pumpkin today and then I gave her chicken and boiled rice (although my husband broiled the chicken instead of broiling it). I called him from my work and he thought I said broil and not boil so he broiled it and she ate all of it. Will it still help her if it's broiled and not boiled? I have more chicken so I am going to boil some tonight for her dinner.

The only thing that matters is that it's not fried or cooked with too much oil. Just needs to be as blend as possible.

yeah it was plain chicken we didn't add anything to it. There was a little juice on the plate that I used to cut the chicken on (it came from the cooked chicken) and I dumped it on the chicken and rice mix. It was only like a teaspoon though it wasn't a lot.

well Hannah went outside and things are alittle more...solid. I will give her the pumpkin agian tonight and more chicken and rice as well. Would the rawhide be making her sick for a few days? She seems normal other than her...outside issue.

It may take a few days for the rawhide to move on through. Give her a couple more days on her bland diet with pumpkin and she should have it cleared out of her system.
And don't forget to "thank" your neighbor

Oh yeah I already thanked them for it. I told them she got sick from the rawhide and they felt really bad so they said that they would pay for the pumpkin and chicken and stuff that I am feeding her. So I guess they aren't all that bad then. They didn't know that rawhide could make a dog sick and I pointed it out that there was a warning right on the package about it giving dogs tummy aches and they never even noticed it. So they stopped giving them to their dog too (so I guess something good came out of Hannah getting sick).

Well that's a good outcome! Except for poor Hannah's bellyache :( Somehow I doubt she'd appreciate the idea that she taught them something and saved their dogs from a possible future bellyache - or worse. Poor little thing!
juliefurry

yeah. I really don't think Hannah would care if there dog got a bellyache though, she doesn't really like Bach. She'd probably think it was great because then he could chase her around and bite her.

Glad to hear Hannah is doing so much better. Have you realized that she has almost had Thanksgiving dinner, except for chicken instead of turkey!
One thing that I learned a long time ago is that unless a rawhide product is made in the USA, you should not use it because South American rawhide comes from hides that are tanned with arsenic. If this were the case with Hannah she might be super sensitive to the arsenic. Is there any way you can check where the stuff was manufactured?
Also---dogs will KILL for sweet potatoes!!!! Same lust as with pumpkin I guess. And they are good for the dogs, but with the potatoes you have to be careful......too much can upset their stomachs again!
I have found that bread will also help bind a dog up, and if needed, the bread can be made into tiny balls, dipped in water just to coat it, then stuffed down the dog's throat if need be. Most folks have bread around who don't have rice, and sometimes you HAVE to get something into a dog to "coat" the stomach. Bread works great.

They were the Dentleys's Granulated. I don't know where they came from though. Both Hannah and Maverick are gonna have to go to the vets because while Hannah is still the same (not solid) I've noticed Maverick isn't really solid either, although it's a little better than Hannah's is.
