Greyhound Racetrack Closing.... Leaving Hundreds of Dogs Homeless!

I read an article on another forum, and thought that I would share the information with you all, as these dogs REALLY need help ASAP!

The Woodlands Greyhound Racetrack will be closing on August 24th, 2008. There are about 600 dogs at the track, and the Greyhound rescues are estimating that they will only be able to get around 200 of the dogs into rescue. That leaves around 400 dogs homeless. Woodlands racetrack is one of the one-stop race tracks, and after the track closes, the remaining dogs will be returned to their breeders, where they will most likely be put down. I find this extremely sad. The Woodlands racetrack is located in Kansas City. R.E.G.A.P. (Retired Greyhounds as Pets) in Kansas City is seeking people to help out. They are in need of foster homes, potential adopters, help with transporting the dogs, ect. If you can help out in any way, please contact R.E.G.A.P. at ( 816 ) - 763 - 3333. Even if you cannot help in any of the ways listed above, you can still help by spreading the word. Forward this information to all of your friends, ect.

I live in here KC and while yes, there will be some dogs in need of homes and REGAP is setting up for these dogs, it does sound like the majority will be either sent to other tracks or retained by the breeders. Wholesale euth is unlikely. My rescue group is all over this right now and it honestly looks like it won't be that giant of a deal...at least in terms of not having to deal with 400 dogs at once.

Yup this happened in CT last year when a track closed down. Most ended up being sent to other tracks and the rest were placed in rescue.
