View Full Version : Dappled dachshunds
I've been seeing more and more of this coloration popping up. Is it new? Something that really shouldn't be bred but is because it's unique looking and there for "worth more"? I know basically nothing about dachshunds as far as coat genetics go. I think they're pretty, but as we all know, "pretty" doesn't necessarily mean "good idea".

I have seen several, I don't think that it's new at all.

No, I believe dapples are accepted.
Here is my neighbor's dapple dachsie, Axel, whom I used to walk.

I was just wondering, because I've only recently started to see them around. Maybe the color has just finally found a following in this area.

I hadn't seen a dapple until I met Axel.

heres some info from AKC website about dapple coloring.
Dappled Dachshunds--The "single" dapple pattern is expressed as lighter-colored areas contrasting with the darker base color, which may be any acceptable color. Neither the light nor the dark color should predominate. Nose and nails are the same as for one and two-colored Dachshunds. Partial or wholly blue (wall) eyes are as acceptable as dark eyes. A large area of white on the chest of a dapple is permissible.
A "double" dapple is one in which varying amounts of white coloring occur over the body in addition to the dapple pattern. Nose and nails: as for one and two-color Dachshunds; partial or wholly self-colored is permissible.

apparently it's acceptable as long as it meets certain criteria

I have seen many dapple doxies from my days at the vet clinic...apparently a very popular color around here! LOL! I have however, never seen a dapple like your neighbors? I would classify this color as a tri color and not dapple. I have never seen a doxie that is marked like your neighbors. Cute though :) Dapple usually more resembles the color merle (sp) in Aussies and such.

Okay, I did a little research and they call your friends doxie a piebald. Here is a link with a picture of a chocolate brown dapple and a piebald. I learn something new everyday :) http://www.whisperingoaksdachshunds.com/catalog.0.html.0.html

I don't know all that much about dachshunds either, but I really like studying colors and color genetics...I find it very interesting. Probably not that interesting of a topic to others though LOL!! :)

At one time I spent over three months solid doing my own reading research into equine color genetics. Facinating stuff, I tell you what. You've got an avid listener right here if you want.

I have read that Dapple or Piebald Dachshunds are not as healthy as the "plain" looking ones. I will look for the link and crosspost.

It says that any dapple piebald has obviously come from a puppy miller. So I'm sorry, it isn't the "dapple" that are unhealthy... It's the combo, "Dapple Piebald." I had heard this a long time ago from someone on a groomer board who breeds and raises show Doxies. But I couldn't find the link where we talked about it.

That's not a dapple. Thats a piebald I believe, dapples are brown or black with white spots. There is also harliquien, and many, many other colors. :) So cute :)
EDIT: Dangit, someone said that before me :)
Yes, if you breed 2 dapples the pups come out with mutations. You have to breed a dapple and a diffrent normal color, to get dapples. My youngest dachshund Juliette was a dapple. As a puppy, she was dappled all over, very vibratally. As she grew she became all brown, except for her neck which is still dappled. Weird. lol Oh, and not all dapple or piebald come from puppymills, they come from respectable breeders as well. Its all where you buy them.
