I know u obviously can't after neutering a male but what about spaying a female...can u still show the dog? I'm almost certain that u can't but just asking.

No the only altering you can do would be say ears or tail if it is part of what is acceptable for the breed. All show dogs must be able to be breed. It doesn't toally make sense to me but my husband used to show and breed dogs and when I started talking about it he went off a bit so I just never asked about it again. Not like he was mad but I guess it's a breeder'show person thing and I just didn't get it. I'm more of a mutt, rescue, ntr and spay type, but we get along so alls good.

The reason you can't is because the whole purpose of showing is to prove that your "speciman" is a great representation of the breed and thereby is worthy to be bred since s/he has great possibilities to produce conformationally sound offspring.
At some shows there are categories specifically for altered dogs but if I have it right they don't count for points or anything, it's more just for fun and bragging rights LOL

SORRY but you guys are wrong you can show a dog after it has been alterd male or female not in conformation but you can always participate in obedience, agility, flyball etc.... plus these are funner than conformation you get to interact with your dog and have alot of fun you can find alot of information on USDAA's website about agility or look in the phone book to contact your local dog club to find out what they offer

Oh yes you can compete in pretty much any other competition with altered dogs (I myself compete in dogsledding and usually 2 out of the 3 dogs I run are altered) but in this case I was talking about conformation showing ;) Sorry I should have specified myself

Nope, like it was said earlier, the whole purpose of the conformation show ring is to show your "breeding stock" to a judge. If a conformation show dog was altered (spayed/neutered) that would defeat the purpose. :)
Once a dog retires from the show ring and/or breeding program then they should of course be spayed or neutered.

That does make a lot of sense... but I thought a show competition was just for the money and bragging rights, lol

In some ways you are right, at least about the bragging rights that is. LOL!! On the other hand, the majority of conformation show people don't make money, in fact they loose money. It is very expensive to breed and show dogs. Only the top of the top that allow celebrities to "sponser" or "finance" their dogs are the ones that are making money and that is few and far between. Most of us do it for the love of the sport and the breed, and that's the honest truth despite what all the stereotypes are. :)

mostly everyone already said it..the point of showing is to promote your breeding..but there are all kinds of fun classes, obidience, hunters at field trials for bird dogs..lots of things u can do...Sheow showed her dogs earned Good Citizen which i think is just a lovely thing to do..let us know if you found something fun!

I do believe conformation is the ONLY one the dogs have to be intact. It is to promote the best of all breeds.....though through the years I feel that politics in the show ring has ruined some breeds.. e.g. the shorter legs in goldens, the feathering in spaniels that are making them look like moving mops ! I do know though that my friends that show their Goldens in conformation sure don't make money !!

Showing is deffinately partially for bragging rights too! I mean honestly, lets say you had a Am. Can. CH ***** who produced 3 Am. CH, 2 Can. CH and 6 Am. Can. CH and a Am. Can. CH Dog with a CDX and TD who sired 8 Am. Can. CH and 3 Can. CH and 5 Am, CH wouldn't you want to tell the world about what your kennel has produced? (sorry to anyone who doesn't understand what I wrote...Am.= American, Can. = Canadian, CH = Champion (have recieve ?8? points in the conformation ring), CDX = Citizen Dog Excellent, TD = Therapy Dog)

Hey I understand ! Though I never showed my dogs, their pedigrees over my 40 years had all these titles plus some you didn't state. BTW...CDX and TDs have nothing to do with conformation.... thus can be obtained if fixed.

That's right Bubba! CDX is obtained through obedience trials and TD is obtained after taking a test (it allows your dog to be a therapy dog and go into hospitals and retirement homes and such)

some breed clubs include groups for spayed/neutered animals in their specialty shows, but you can't show a dog to a champion title that way.

That is one thing I do not like about showing in comformation. I had a great Doberman female, She was perfect in every way! Would have been a great show dog. She slipped on the ice and broke a few teeth and they had to be pulled. So she was missing 4 teeth. So then we could not show her. If showing is to show the breed, then the owner should be able to show an altered dog! My point is that things happen and sometimes a dog needs to be altered but it that dog is perfect example of the breed then you should be able to show. Just my opinion.

I don't want to show my dogs anyway lol not in conformation at least. Seems a little to serious and not enough fun for you and the dog. I want something where my dog and I can run around and play and if he messes up well it was just for fun anyway and as long as we enjoyed ourselves than mission accomplished.
although have you seen that "nutts for mutts" dog show they have every year. i can't remember where it is (saw it on the animal planet) and it helps support animal shelters and such. haha it's so cute. it's all for mutts no pure breeds allowed lol and they do silly things like the best tail wag. best kisser, fastest runner, best trick, best costume. Just silly fun things like that. I thinks omething like that would be great fun for both parties. :D
p.s.- I know i didn't answer the question but i don't want to be repetitive lol

Sparks, a lot of summer fairs and events have fun doggy contests like that. Sometimes there are even ribbons and small money prizes!

Well, I can say that conformation showing is what you make of it. If you choose to be a political basket case then no, it's not fun. I can tell you, that I have some incredible memories with my dogs that happened in the show ring, and YES WE HAD FUN!!! There are bad people out there that make showing a chore for the dog, but the majority of the people I know truly love their dogs and make training and showing a fun and rewarding experience for their dogs. I always make sure they get the yummiest treats and get to play with their favorite toy WHILE IN THE RING!!! I will always show in conformation because it is a lot of fun and you are surrounded by a lot of people that love your breed as much as you do. We sit around and talk for hours with our pugs on our laps...it's a ton of fun!! My pug used to know when she would get to a show, she would start barking and wagging her tail and jumping around in her crate. She also knew when she won!! The judges used to always say to me "does that tail ever stop wagging?" I said nope!!!! Anyway, I am all for all types of dog competition. I think it just comes down to finding something you enjoy doing with your dog and making it fun for the dog. It is hard for me to hear all the stereotypes that people assume about conformation dog shows. They just aren't true for the most part. :(

Well I am thinking about the political basket cases ou were talking about lol. Like have any of you seen that show "show dog mom's and dad's" those people are insane. I can't imagine that being fun for the dog. but I do see your point about the people that do it just because they lvoe their dog and its fun :D but i guess every competition has its extremists :D

You are right, and I have seen "Show Dog Mom's and Dads." To me, that show makes me livid because it makes the general public think that that is how "show people" act and carry on. Yes, some do, but the majority do not. It is like the movie "Best In Show." I hate to admit that there are some people out there that actually act that way, but most do not. I just think that people put on TV what will sell, not what is true. It's like all the pitbull hype. They only tell the bad, never the good because it's the bad that stirs the pot and gets people going. :)

Speaking of bragging, I just found out that one of my great-grandsons now has 8 All Breed Best In Shows, and is the #1 Toy Manchester and #6 Toy Dog in Canada. He has both his Canadian and American Championships. It is gratifying to know that I did contribute to improving the breed.........which is the whole point of breeding.
The lady who got me addicted to Toy Manchesters helped to re-establish Manchester Terriers in England after the 2nd World War. The breed was on the verge of extinction, and one of Mary's males was exported to England, and was one of two males who brought the breed back into existence. His name was Ch. Gwinnywillows Thunderstorm.

Wow, all of your knowledge on the subject (everyone) is awesome and it boggles my mind. Maybe I'll need to read through this thread after I go home and have .. ummm.. a couple of glasses of wine :p
Honestly though, I'd never be able to understand all this stuff, but it sounds great and I love to learn about this stuff.

In the Uk you can still show a dog if it has been nutered, you just have to inform the kennel club first
