Jämthund info

I'm hoping some of you know something about this breed. All I know is, the Jämthund is used for Moose hunting. And that's pretty much it. I have tried to look for info on google, but couldn't find anything about it's character that I could read. Well, nothing except "brave and energetic".

Ah, swedish elkhound. Really pretty dogs :-D Relitively rare outside of sweden. Very powerful. Bred for both hunting and sled-pulling. I don't know a ton about them, I guess, but if you like them maybe you'd be interested in the norwegian elkhound? It's similar but sooo much easier to find. I was considering getting one a while ago, but ended up with a mixed pup htat ended up being extremely fear aggressive...kinda wish I'd gone with the elkhound, lol. Great dogs, friendly, I'd say they're on the smaller side of "large". From what I remember reading your earlier post, you wanted a dog that loved you much more than strangers? I'm just taking a guess that these dogs are very much like other spitzs in the way that they're pack dogs and if you're the alpha, well, they'd just fit what you want pretty well. But they're still friendly to other people...I'm a little biased against the siberian huskys because one snapped at me once, it did NOT like other people in the slightest. I hated that dog...these dogs won't be as much like that. They're independent and dominant. Good dogs.
So I'd say they're actually probably a pretty good match for you. Definently something to consider.

Since it is mostly used for hunting, I would think it would develope a strong bond with the hunting partner (owner). And I have read that it is a good companion.

What else is there to know about the Jämthund? Do it require much exercise? Since it is used to help a hunter, I would guess that it will not run away from me. Can I walk with it off-leash anywhere I go? Will it come when I tell it to?

You should never trust a dog completely to walk off-leash. Even if it is completely trained, you should never trust it. You wouldn't want your baby to see something interesting and then allow his instincts to play a part and him run off and get run over. I would never ever allow my dogs to walk off leash with me. They are always on leash and supervised.

"Temperament: High-spirited, yet very lovable". I guess there aren't any websites in English with more details on the character. I have to find an owner to mail about this I suppose.

It is a rather pretty breed. Acquiring it wont be a problem. All I need to know is what the difference between this and the German Shepherd is, compared to my requests. I don't suppose any of you know of an owner that speaks English?

Hunting dogs aren't. But they are intent on making a catch. I mean in public like walking down a street. I have no experience with hunting with a dog, but I do know that I would never let any kind of breed of dog walk off-leash while I am in a public place such as walking down the sidewalk. Besides the fact that he could run off, someone could nab him. Probably not that big a dog, but I am talking someone could nab "my-size" dog. LOL

Well, napping a medium-large sized dog without you knowing it, is nearly impossible. I think walking in the big city without a leash is illegal in Denmark, but I'm not sure.

And I disagree with that you can't trust dogs off-leash. What makes you think this? Experience?

I just read this "Very popular elk dogs over here but hunt predators as well. Very tuff and fearless. Often used in a leash when elk hunting. If any of you guys have experience with the breeds we Scandinavians hunt with(spitz or tracking dogs), I would love to hear about it."
I hope this doesn't mean that it can't be trusted off-leash.
