Help! Has anyone seen this before?

Our 13 year old fox terrier has a rough past month or so, in June he had to have his scrotum removed because of what looked like a growth. But the vet said it was scar tissue built around an injury, about 2 weeks after hsi surgery we went out of town and came back to find his stomach and leg swollen and bruised. Took him to the emergency pet clinic and they took x-rays and deteremined that it was soft tissue swelling and had nothing to do with his organs. Vet gave his fluid pills and antibiotics and the majority of the swelling has gone down, but two weeks later it still looks awful. Also at first it didn't seem to bother him, now he is weak ( doesn't want to play or go outside), vomiting, not eating, and running fevers. If anyone has any ideas on what this might be please let us know, he is like our child and we don't want to see him suffer any longer.

o gosh, my cujo had that a few weeks after neutering. i could swear it was from the operation, but the vet said it was cellulitis. which i dont believe. he was on antibiotics too, which pretty much cleared it up, but he still has 2 little scabs that sometimes pop open and ooze. i can see if i can take a pic and then post it here. cujos wasnt this big, but it was just as red.

ok here it is, if u look closely, u can see the little spots that he still has right beside his penis, and on top of his tattoo. his used to be the sizes of a golfball. i also forgot to mention, he didnt vomit or refused to eat or anything like that.

That looks like a trip to another vet to me . . . poor guy!

Is it just the lighting in the photo, or have his ears gotten about as red as his belly? If that's the case, I'd wonder if it's something systemic rather than a localized problem now.

That really looks painful. I would seek a second opinion. If you go to a different vet. please give all the information you have on your dog. Don't expect him to know from looking at him. Vets can give you a better diagnoses if they have all background info.

He is going back to the vet today, his ears only get red like that when he is running a fever which he was in the picture. We are going to see what the vet says today and then decide to seek out a second opinion. Thanks everyone for your help.

Please let us know how he makes out at the vet today. If your vet doesn't give you the answers you're looking for, definitely go to another vet.

Poor baby! It's painfull just to look at it!
Could it be that his wound after the surgery got infected? maybe while you wer gone something happened.. Antibiotics should have helped though...

His name is Kissie, I know it's a funny name for a male dog but my fiance has had him since she was 8 years old, so he is like her child and mine too. He has an appointment this afternoon so we will see, I just wish he would get better because it hurts to see my fiance so upset about him. Thanks to all of you for your support.

Oh that looks so bad, please do tell us what the vet says and I would get a 2nd opinion. Was it always taht size or did it grow/ over a larger area and for how long has this been going on. It just looks like it would be so painful.

Looks systemic to me also did the vet do any tests on the "scar" tissue to rule out other diseases??? I was just wondering it could also be an area of infection that may require IV antibiotics ecspecially if it is out of control as it looks in the pictures

Well Kissie made hsi trip to the vet today and he said that it is looking better, and I must agree it has gotten a little better than it was. He gave us a new prescription of some stronger antibiotics to see if that will clear it faster, so we'll see how it goes. But on a plus side he is feeling much better today, he is eating more and being more and more playful and his vomiting has stopped and he only had a little bit of fever tonight.

You'll want to support Kissie's own system too. Antibiotics wreak havoc on the good bacteria and you can end up with a yeast problem that exacerbates the infection, so what he eats is going to be very important to help him fight this off. Adding probiotics to his food will help. You can use the same ones you'd use for human food supplements.

You can also try a health food store. They can help usually help you or they might know someone that can tell you the amounts for your dog.

Well Kissie started his new medicene today so we wiil see how this round goes, I was holding him and looking at his stomach area and the red areas are hard and feel warm. But he does seem to be feeling better so that is a good thing, just wish it hurry clear up.

Well Kissie left us today at 4:45, he was a fighter till the end and he went on his own terms as usual. He always did do everything the way he wanted to, hard headed thing. The new vet we took him too did surgery today and the growth was cancer, and he said that it was spreading so quick that he didn't expect him to make it much longer. But he held on till we got there and we stayed with him till the end. The dcotor advised us that putting him down was the best option, so we decided to do that but before we could he went on his own. Like I said he always did things on his own terms, so we decided to cremate him and maybe spread his ashes someplace. Leia and I both would like to thank everyone of you that helped us out and gave us and Kissie moral support. From the bottom of our hearts we thank you, and may everyday with your pet be as wonderful and beautiful as ours was with Kissie.

I am so sorry little Kissie left. As you say, he did it in his own time. He spared you from having to make that hard, hard decision. I hope you and your fiancee will spend all the time you need talking about him and remembering all of the funny things he did and the special moments along with the everyday joys he brought to your life.
