ok, so I am a groomer, but have never heard anything about this, so thought I would ask you guys. I have this like obsession with making sure Beemer's nails are short at all times. I tend to dremel them once a week or once every two weeks.

so my question is, can a dog's nails ever be too short? (besides quicking them, im not meaning that, I just mean grinding them back too far?)

As long as they aren't cute pass the quick then no. Shorter the better!

I have the same obsession.....lol

This is a picture...blurry mind you and tiny foot..of my dog's nails. I like them short.

I don't think they can be too short. I try to keep my dogs' nails very short as well.

Here's Keira's paw... her nails are a tad longer than I like in this picture, but it's roughly the length of all my dogs' nails. I don't even give them a chance to click when walking before they're trimmed again.

I wish I could keep the drive to get my dogs nails that short.

I DO like them short... and I'll tell myself to do them every two days but I'll go three days in between, then four then... hah. That's my goal for this summer. Get the dogs nails short again.

I have fancies that I could keep my dogs' nails that short, but I let them use theirs as traction cleats when running. They're both a good length, right about level with the pads, though Sawyer clicks a little right now. They look good, but I've let the quicks get a bit long as of late. Virgo had VERY short nails when I got her, due to being on concrete for 3 months straight at the shelter. They've grown out a bit now, but are still pretty short.

I'd like to keep them that short, but Cider uses them in agility. Too long isn't helpful, but she uses them on the dog walk and frame. Smudges stay short without much effort, but not as short as tollers, wow. I don't think I knew you could get them that short.

haha, thanks you guys! and ya thats about as short as Beemer's nails are. I was just making sure that keeping his nails that short wasnt going to mess with his foot in some kind of weird way or something lol.

Nope - if short nails were detrimental to a dog's health, Ronin would be six feet under by now! His nails are freakishly short... just the way I like 'em!

Ilsa's could be shorter, but for now this will have to do:

I didn't know one could get nails that short. Those of you with dogs with very short nails.. how often did you have to go at it to get them there?

Cider's back ones aren't bad they maintain themselves at a level I consider okay.. The front ones grow like weeds even when I am on my game..

Whoa, Buster looks like he has 10 feet claws next to Dance lol.
My mum used to always do it because I was too freaked out, now I usually do Busters every week or 2 and maybe his back ones every few weeks. And I love doing it, but I hit the quick the first time I felt soo bad.
All but 2 of his nails are black and I knwo the quicks are very long, his back ones stay pretty short but I try to take a bit off his front ones every week or so.
I also only have clippers, I would love a dremel but I'm pretty sure I'd have to import one, which would suck.

I don't think you'd have to import one - jsut go to a hardware store and ask for a handheld rotary grinder - they're not exactly cheap, but one should last you many years. Mine is nearly 7 years old, and still going strong! (though I do need to get a new battery cell for mine)

Wow, I don't think I've ever seen dog nails that short lol.

I hate clipping nails. Hate it. It's probably easier with a dremel but man I'm afraid I'd screw up using one of those.

Oh well... I leave Lucy's nails for the groomer since she's such a beast for us (it took 4 people to clip her nails once... we're talking a 12 pound dog!), and Molly decides to nap while her nails are being clipped, so I suppose I don't have it that bad.

After seeing these pics though... I think it's now my goal to get Molly's nails that short. :p

I never tried a dremel but if I try and clip Milo's nails he gets so upset he shakes and throws up. And screams. It's BAD.

I am happy to report that Maddie's nails are getting shorter and shorter. I clipped them every other week, and now I'm clipping a little bit more off every week. They getting a lot shorter, and I really like it! She likes to run around like she does after a bath, when I clip them. It's funny!

When I get them to a length that I love I'll post pics. Missy will be my next project! :p

i clip my dogs' nails every two weeks and they are definitely not as short as any of your dogs'.

Are you just snipping into the quick a teeny bit every time you clip, or what? Blossom is a horrid monster to do her nails, I would love to get them a lot shorter.

My dog used to have really long quicks, so I just tried to clip them at least once a week, very short but not to the quick (try to never cut into the quick, it's very painful). Then we'd go on at least one or two walks on the sidewalk to wear them down more, and gradually the quicks got shorter and shorter. You have to be dilligent about it, though, and keep it up for several weeks before you see significant improvement.

All of their back nails are that short, but some of their front nails are long, cause its hard to trim them! (Daggett and Brad have to go to the vets to get their nails trimmed EVERYTIME, so they get done once a month.

I dremel my dogs. We used to clip, but that never got them short enough for my liking.

I want to use the dremel on Maddie so bad... but its like impossible! and of course she's the dog who lets me do it without any training/getting used to it.
And that hose trick - doesn't work! :p lol. Too Much Hair!
