And never bother to brush them irritate the crap out of me. I just spent two hours grooming a dog that should have taken... oh, maybe forty five minutes. A little maltese... he was matted clear through to the skin and his skin is red because of how tight it was. Its sick. He LIKED the brushing once I got to where I could actually do it. I had to take off his top knot and everything... I've never seen something so bad!!! One of his toe nails was grown into his pad, too. UGH.

Welcome to my life. If we groom 8 dogs, i guarantee that there will be at least 2 matted dogs. Matted to the point of no brushing. They have to be shaved. Face, ears, body, most of the time i can leave a tail tip.

I know that one. It drives me nuts. And their people don't get it when you say "brush them" or they get mad that you HAD to shave them. -_-

I don't get it either. I admit I can't keep Snoopy properly brushed when he has long hair, so I keep it short so I do not get talked to in a demeaning way at the groomers when I bring him in and they stick this fancy brush into him to show me he is matted. My brushes for some reason can't get deep into him, or it just never catches on the mats. So I keep Snoopy's hair short.

I don't get it either - when I was grooming, we'd have a few horribly matted dogs each day.

My question is... HOW can the owners stand to pet their dogs when they get so nasty? Ewww...

*blushes* You should have seen Smudge after a weekend on the ground in an x pen at regionals... Oh wow.. I brushed him out one night and thought he wasn't doing too badly. Put him on my grooming table the next day and he had some horrific mats. Felt terrible. If that's what happens after a weekend no brushing.. I don't know how people can go weeks or longer not brushing.

I gave up and took thinning sheers the the armpit ones, The chest mat wasn't too bad I got it free without much effort..

I want a long haired breed because I really enjoy grooming.

Anyway, I ran into some Newfs & Saint Bernards at a dog park I went to.. neither brushed. So eventually they came back to the park shaved. Just asking for a sun burn. Just stupid. I don't get why people get long haired dogs and ignore them either..

it takes a LOT of effort to keep roo long haired in the winter - i just get in the habit of brushing him a little bit every day and then i don't have any issues... okay well i do cheat a bit and keep certain areas nicely trimmed that are prone to matting....

I know what you mean. I used to work at a grooming place as a receptionist, and sometimes we would save some matted clumps as proof in case the owners got mad at us. I remember there was two times while I worked there that the owner of the shop actually called animal control, and it was for the same dog. It was a poodle who had a horrid flea problem, bad matts, just disgusting. And the lady who owned the dog seemed to hate it. She was seen screaming at the dog to get in the car, and wouldn't even touch the poor old thing for anything. I always wondered why she had the dog if she hated it; something weaker to take out her own frustration and pain on, I suppose. I hope AC was able to help that dog. :(

We're lucky enough that Benji's coat only needs brushing once a week when we let it grow long. It would take a LONG time for him to get anywhere near nasty if we didn't brush him.

We had a pair of OES's in full coat. The owner refused to clip them and never brushed them. I found a small branch (large twig) in the fur on one of them among the matts.

I dont get it either. I work at a grooming shop and am amazed at how bad people let their dogs get. Our dogs have always been so nicley brushed (2 collies and 3 poodles). I have never got how people can just let the poor dogs go. And then get PO when the dog needed to be shaved.

What I also dont get is how people can let a dog get such bad eye crusties. maybe its just me but I am ALWAYS wiping of my dogs eye crusties (and cats) as I see them. Some get so bad that after they were removed from the dog that there as actually a infection starting becuase they were so badly tangled up around the eye holding dirt ect.

I groomed a shi-tzu recently that was badley matted under the belly and on the back legs. The mom was ok with the shaving of the dog but her little girl started crying because she wanted a longer coat. I told her to start brushing the dog more often and I wouldn't have to shave her next time. She didn't want to brush the dog, so mom said she will have to pay more attention and do it herself. Sometimes the kids shouldn't be given a long haired dog if they won't take care of it. Sometimes it's like shearing a sheep it's that bad.

I work with dog hair instead of people hair now for a reason...

Teddy always always gets 2 little matts behind his ears.No matter how many times a brush him. I try to brush him at least every other day in the fall and winter and 2 times a week in summer since I clip him down.

I've always found little mats behind ears too ! Must brush there first !
