I am for sure looking into starting a class based around clicker training with Spankers but I have a question. Where the heck do you buy a clicker?

Pet supply shops?? Around here, they're usually in a bin near the check-out.
You can buy them online (obviously) but I find that a PITA, cuz I does not haz credit card. :(

I got mine at the local pet store.

The local petstores keep giving me a reply with an undertone like I'm a mad woman. But they aren't chainstores and are rather small so that could be why.
I don't like ordering stuff on line. If I'm going to buy something it has to be in person. I like to get things done. I hate waiting.

Petsmart, Petco, and other such big stores will have clickers. You could also contact some local private clicker trainers, most of them order them in bulk and get their name/logo printed on them. They might sell you one.

True dat!! :)
I find the bigger chain stores have clickers, as do some of the cooler independent stores.
SuperPet (RIP :( ) had ones with adjustable volume, which one trainer of mine freaked over--in a good way. She said she'd never seen anything like them, and that they would be great for dogs that were scared of regular clickers.

I'm totally hitting up a few petstores tomorrow and seeing if I can find one. I can see it being right up Spanky's alley.

Are you talking about the bone-shaped plastic ones? Cause I've never been able to tell a difference between the "volumes" and the're a lot harder to use. I've always been able to muffle the clicker and gradually make it louder to teach sensitive dogs that the noise is ok.

Also, you don't HAVE to have a clicker to do clicker training. You can use anything that makes a noise - click pens, bells, whistles, etc. You can even use a word - most trainers use "yes" - it's just quicker with a sound that is exactly the same every time. Just fyi, it's not like a clicker is a magic training device.

Ooooh a clicky pen. Good idea.
I'm aware it isn't a magical training device however the trainer I really like likes the clicker method. So I thought I'd give her a go, you know?

Well no, clickers aren't magic, but they make a sound this is clear and consistent for the dog, unlike your voice.
I don't clicker train, I'm too clumsy. LOL! but I do marker train.

I've been a clicker trainer for several years, I do know that the clicker itself is the easiest marker.... But I'd hate for you to be excited about starting training and think that there's no possible way to do it until you find an actual clicker. You CAN start now.
Also, if your trainer is a clicker trainer she probably sells/gives away clickers herself. It only makes sense that they'd provide you with the tool you're required to have (I know that's how I taught classes, everyone got a free clicker)

I just didn't want to have to wait till the classes start. I wanted to see how I felt about it right away. I'm a bit weird that way. When I read about something I am so eager to try it and see if it works.
:p
I already train my dogs on a daily basis. Thought I'd see if another approach will work better. Spanky loves to think and Miley isn't the brightest crayon in the box. I decided to use one of those clicky pen things tonight to see how I feel about the whole clicker idea. I also thought I'd try it out on Miley, my dumb bum, to really see how I feel about it. Spanky is already a whiz kid. And guess what? She responded really well to it. When I was done she picked the pen up and brought it to me like "Uh, mom, I finally get it. Let's do more."
Too cute.

I got mine online. I asked a pet shop and what they said "sorry, all we sell is these treat dispensers that happen to click when you pop out a treat, we could order in a "proffesional" one but they cost about $300"
LOL! I had already seen some online for under $5. I just said okay and walked out and went home and brough one from Blackdog Wear

$300?!?!? What?? It's a little bit of plastic and metal!! :yikes:
I seem to remember paying a couple bucks for mine, definitely under $5.

I think they didn't know what you were talking about.... must've thought it was a remote collar or something.

300???? mine came free with an order from an online company. I hardly used it. Started, but then just went back to my voice.
Tell you what, i'll give it to you for a third of that price, it's a real deal :)

I payed 99 cents for mine from Petsmart. Best part? I lost it and didn't feel bad, I wouldn't feel comfortable using a $300 one around my dog :lol-sign:

$300 for a clicker? Is it made from frigging solid gold?
I ordered mine from Karen Pryor's site.

I've been sucked into the clicker training addiction vortex.

the 300 dollar clicker that dispensed treats was likely a remote treat delivery device. I forget what they are called... they are really cool, but only for specific needs, and are worth a few hundred.

Oh! The Manners Minder. Yeah, I think they do promote that as a clicker-type device.

There are various kinds of clickers, but any should work fine. If you get addicted, you may want to try different ones. The first ones were rectangular and I often got confused about which end to click. Then a few years ago, the i-clicker came out -- I think it was the clickertraining.com people who invented it but am not positive. I much prefer the i-clicker.
I've seen one online that seems to be a finger device, maybe kinda like a finger puppet. That could be handy for those times when an extra hand is needed!
