a long-coat chihuahua or a yorkie???

help! I can't decide... wat shud I get? a long coat chihuahua or a yorkie? they're both so cute and adorable... pls share ur views/ experiences w/ either dogs...tnx! :)

We used to have six chihuahuas and they were the coolest dogs. They have different personalities though. Most are nice but some can be a bit on the mean site.
I don't know much about Yorkies but the ones I have seen seem very cool too.

Chihuahuas & yorkies both have personalities that REALLY vary...

Chis tend to be VERY aggressive if they are allowed to do whatever they wish... They certainly need rules in the house. As do Yorkies.

Yorkies usually have a slightly more playful personality throughout their lifetime. I'm not saying Chihuahuas don't, I'm sure some do, I've just yet to meet them. Yorkies definitely can be calm, but most love to play with something.

My experiences w/ Chihuahuas have all been good. But, you MUST buy from a good breeder to ensure strong nerves & good temperament. Don't buy into the 'teacup chihuahua' fad, you'll only get an unhealthy dog with a horrible temperament. the EXACT same thing goes for yorkies.

Price-wise, Yorkies cost a bit more. A well-bred Chi is usually (In my experiences) $400+ and a well-bred yorkie is usually $600+.... You can certainly get them for less money, but I personally would be skeptical of a price that sounds too good to be true.


Have you considered rescue? There's a lot of Chihuahuas out there in rescues, young ones even. (Not sure about yorkies, haven't looked)

You're so right, Grace! The personality varies greatly with the dog. My best friend's sister has two long haired Chihuahuas. One is a sweet, amiable, well mannered little critter with a lovely disposition. The other one has a foul temper, is completely disobedient, and pees on everything - the carpet, chairs, beds, you name it. They're littermates and have been together, living in the same circumstances - the only difference is each dog's individual disposition.

Did you do any research on both breeds? You should never just jump into getting ANY type of dog because its cute and adorable. All dogs are a huge responsibility, some breeds being more challenging than others. I suggest you pick up a few good books before you move to the next step.

Challenging is exactly the word I was looking for that can describe Chihuahuas & Yorkies. They're not easy pets.

Gee, I'm going to try not to be prejudiced here. :D I think Yorkies are the best! But they aren't for everybody. If they are true to their breed, they are very intelligent and get bored easily, they are very much a terrier, and they are high maintenance. Yes, all dogs are individuals and training is a factor, but there is generally a big difference in personality between a Long-haired Chi and a Yorkie. I agree. Do research on the breeds to make certain the one you pick fits your personality and life style. After all, you're shopping for a best friend.

Research, research, research! Google both breeds and click on all links you can find and read until you can't see any more! Otherwise, you may be disappointed with what you get. A dog is no small decision in life, since a toy breed can easily live for 15-17 years or even longer. Yes, the other poster was right about the individual dogs varying, even within a breed. Sometimes drastically. I've seen many chis that were absolute lovers, and others that were shivering, wimpy, nervous wrecks. The same with yorkies. Pugs are much more apt to be outgoing and with a stable, friendly temperament. Shih tzus are absolutely wonderful, but require much grooming (as do yorkies, for that matter). My favorite dog I ever had (and I've had quite a few, since I'm now 49) was my little Shih Tzu. What a charmer she was - never met a stranger, and never had a "down" day in her life - even when she finally had to be put down from a severe heart murmur when she was 13. She was courageous and positive even to the very end. I learned a lot about life from that 7 lb. dog. But I did have to groom her almost daily, or keep her hair very short (about an inch to two inches long). It was a huge undertaking, and not to be taken lightly. Good luck with your decision!
