I saw this story on the news last night about a town just north west of Nashville. The ordinance has always been there but not enforced. Officials on the new were saying how they don't want people bit by this breed of dog; they are dangerous. This just sickened me. Many people interviewed in that town don't have the monetary resources to comply with all the requirements. Here's the report:
Pit Bull Battle - Cindy Carter
An old ordinance comes back to bite pit bull owners in Greenbriar. Though its been on the books for years, Greenbrier leaders plan to enforce an ordinance that places many restrictions on people who own pit bulls or pit bull mix dogs.
Authorities say they're asking dog owners to comply for the sake of public safety. However, many dog owners believe they're paying the price for pit bull owners who aren't responsible enough to keep their pets in in check.
Troy Henson says it will cost at least 15-thousand dollars to comply with the law. "Its a fear factor more than it is about by fact."
Greenbrier Police Chief, Richard Hatfield says fear is very much a part of this. He says many people are afraid of pit bulls and though he wouldn't call dog bites a problem in Greenbriar, he says they have had a few incidents involving pit bulls in the past. "To have this tool in place, it allows us to come and take the necessary steps to give assurance to people with small children, people walking or senior citizens in town."
Some of the regulations include: Dog pens must either have a secure floor or walls embedded at least two feet into the ground. Pens must also have secure roofs. Pit bulls must be leashed or muzzled outside of their pens and dog owners must have a 50-thousand dollar insurance policy that covers liability.
