I think this is silly. As long as the dog is okay I find no problem with this... although I personally think that four years may be a bit extreme. Aside from that, I actually think it's kind of cute.
I know a of you dyed spots on your dogs for Valentine's day and whatnot, but perhaps you might want to double-check your locals laws before doing it again to avoid what this woman is dealing with...

I also think that's silly. I understand why the law was made - because they way they used to die bunnies and chicks was just wrong IMO, but $1,000 ?? It's her dog, its not like she's dying the dog to sell... It'd be different if the pups skin and coat are damaged or something. . .
I wonder how this will play out. If she had several warnings... I don't know if she'll be able to get out of it! :o

Wow. As long as the dog isn't hurt then I don't see what's wrong with it.

This is a classic case of overinclusion . . . the law was written for a good reason, but it was written in such a way that it has a much broader application than the one intended. With several warnings, her best bet is to argue the legislative history (why the law was passed) and the first amendment.
I wish her well. I wouldn't dye my poodle pink, but I see no reason why she shouldn't!

don't they occasionally paint numbers and such on livestock? How do they get around laws like this? Totally Lilavati...over OVER inclusion lol.

That is crazy! I do not see anything wrong with Dyeing dogs as long as dog is not hurt.

ya it appears she used all natural products (beet juice) It's not like she is covering the dog with harsh chemicals. and if she is being honest about doing it to promote breast cancer awareness I think that's great. A neat idea to promote an important issue to many people in a new and exciting way. What better way to raise awareness than to go outside the box and present something that people are really going to notice :D
Yeah that's ridiculous and I hope she fights it and wins.

Here's how our cities law is worded...
"A. A person commits an offense if he sells, offers for sale, gives as a prize, barters or displays any living chickens, ducks, goslings, rabbits or hamsters that have been artificially colored or any other fowl or animal which has been dyed, colored or otherwise treated so as to impart to them an artificial color."

No offense but I think the lady walked into it. She was warned it was against the law but she did it anyway and now she's facing consequences. If she wants to spread awareness, she can get a pink coat to put on her dog. She broke the law, she faces the consequences. Not all that absurd, to me.

***Looks at Emma and the Shamrock Stencils laying on the counter with the green dye beside them***
If she had the warnings then she deserved it. But the law is kinda stupid

That law is just plain stupidly written.

I think the law is absurd. yes she was warned and did it anyway so perhaps this incident warrants a ticket but hopefully fighting it will make them think about how they word laws. Stupid to say someone can't put beet juice on their PET lol. What if I was canning beets one day and accidently spilled them and fluffy was under foot... UH OH dye job... then a get a $1000 ticket.
I know that's now what happened in this case but the law needs to be refined.
But she is getting a heck of a lot of publicity out of this... and you know what they say, even bad publicity is good publicity lol.
That is a stupid law. Especially since the dog was not harmed.
I don't entirely agree with the practice of dyeing baby mammals, but the chickens, ducks goslings etc. are actually dyed while in the egg. It is very easy to do. It involves a syringe, food coloring, and some paraffin.
The process? Drill tiny hole in eggshell within 48 hours of eggs hatching date. Carefully inject the food coloring into the shell cavity. *NOTE* the chick itself is in no way actually poked at all during this process. Seal tiny hole with a bit of melted paraffin. Tada! When it hatches some time in the next 48 hours, it's fluff will be whatever color you injected into the egg. Back when I bred chickens, I was tempted to try darker colors on the white chicks because the white ones always get heavily predated during the first few weeks (as opposed to the darker ones), but never actually got around to it. The chicks grow up just fine though. They grow new fluff after a while and look just like a normal bird. Contrary to what the AR folks will tell you, people don't go around half-drowning baby chicks to make them green and pink. I don't know about the bunnies though....
I have dyed some of my white hens dark green before they were penned up all the time because of hawk predation. We went from losing 2-3 white birds a week to losing none.

Sure the law may be absurd. But if you don't obey the law it's your own problem. I hope she knows now that she has to obey them. lol.
She was given a warning. And if you spilled juice on your pet and explained what had happened, I am pretty sure they'd let you go without a warning. I really don't think dying your dog could be confused with spilling a couple spots of juice on your dog. Common sense stuff I'd think.
Is dying your dog good for it, anyway?

How would anything ever change if someone didn't say "This law is crap and I am going to go against it!"
My dog Miley has pink hair right now. The law wouldn't stop me from dying her hair. I don't have any intent on doing it again but if I got warned it's in my nature to be cheeky and continue doing it. The law can kiss my rear in a situation like that. The dog wasn't harmed. Heck if it's anything like Miley it enjoys getting it doen.

I know a couple stupid laws that are still on the books. There are only a few ways to get dumb laws changed.

i think its stupid to have to pay a fine as long as the dog is in no danger then why worry about what this woman chose to do

The law is silly. I admire this womans courage to continue to raise awareness and include her dog. If she has the 1000 dollars to spend if she fails fighting it, then why does it matter? This ticket is getting great publicity for its stupidity. If I had more money I would offer to pay a bit myself. Then again I dyed Dekka's Mohawk pink with cool aid.

I get what you're saying, but you don't have to break a law to get it changed, is what I'm trying to say. There are more logical ways of going about getting a stupid law changed than purposefully breaking it.
Don't get me wrong, I don't see anything wrong with dying your dogs hair. And I don't think, unless it's harmful, someone should tell you you can't. So if it got to that and there was a law against it, you should try to get it changed. You don't need to break it to change it. Yes? Yes. :)

It's a darn good way to bring attention to something you think is bogus though. They should be more concerned about actual animal abuse. Not a bit of beet juice on a dog.

No, you don't have to break a law to get in changed. But with laws like this, its often very hard to get it changed without public support . . . because frankly, no one really cares. Why bother to change it . . . ?
However, when there's a woman in the paper who dies her dog with beet juice to bring in support for breast cancer research facing a $1,000 fine because of a law designed to prevent the dying of rabbits and chicks for Easter (a practice so long out of fashion that I don't even remember when people still did it) you're likely to get the law changed very quickly. Because you'll have letters to the government expressing outrage. And that might get the law updated very quickly.
Of course, then PETA will show up, telling us all how it is degrading and humilating to dye your poodle . . .
I think she knew the risk of breaking the law . . . and she'll probably have to pay the fine. But she's made her point, and that might get the law changed. That's civil disobediance for you.

look up the worlds MANY stupid laws, ill tell you now EVERYONE (unless you live in a bubble) has broken at least one...
in Georgia its not only illegal to buy but OWN a vibrator or other sex toy
its illegal to fish for whales in texas!
its illegal to ride girraffes in canada...
heck theres one where taxi cabs in london HAVE to carry a bail of hay in their boot back from LONG ago which is simply ridiculous!
being fined for dying your dog with a natural product is ridiculous...there are people out there still culling puppies from litters that dont "look" like show prospects
theres puppymills dotted throughout the miswest that SCREAM cruelty...
and yet THIS is what there focusing on?!
serisouly
ruby was pink for halloween, we raised over $500 for breast cancer awareness...she loved the attention.
as long as your using natural chemical free dyes (koolaid, manic panic, beet juice) it does not harm the pet, its not perminent, it doesnt effect them physically and is not cruel in any way shape or form (unless you have a boy you decide to dye pink...then thats just plain mean...
they should be focusing their efforts on REAL law breakers...
