View Full Version : Hannah is SO sad!

Today Mack went in to get neutered and for the first time since we've had her Hannah is an only dog. I don't think she realizes it's just for today though, she's walking around all depressed and lonely. When I got back from taking Mack to the vets she ran to the kitchen, thinking he was there, and then I let her out and she ran over to where we'll sometimes tie Mack up (he'll run away if we don't). Once she noticed he wasn't there she just gave me this sad pitiful look and laid down in the grass. She's played a little bit today but not much, mostly she's just been laying by my feet, licking my toes, and sighing VERY loudly. I've been trying to play with her and do her obedience but she's not really interested in doing much today. Is it possible for a puppy to be this sad? I hope she'll be better tomorrow when he comes home (although then I'll have to keep her away from him for a few days so he can heal).

Doggie hugs & kisses to Hannah. I'm not sure how old Mack, but neutered young isn't much healing compared to a female that has stitches. Ask the vet how long they have to be apart.

he's 10 months old. The vet requires them to stay over night and then they get a bath the following morning and are allowed to go home in the afternoon. I'm about to call and check on him in a few minutes, I called at 2 this afternoon and he hadn't even went in to surgery yet. We hadn't planned on neutering him for another month but our landlord found out he was part pit and DEMANDED that it be done in 2 weeks or he was out and if we didn't get rid of him WE were out (which doesn't really matter to us because we are SOOOO close to closing a deal on our OWN house).

Glad to hear you're getting your own home. Will you be able to stay where you are until you close on the house?
I know when Max was neutered, you couldn't even see it. We tried to keep him calm for a day, but after that there was no stopping him.
Let us know how he's doing.

Yeah, we'll stay here until the deal on the house closes. I just called the vet and they said that Mack had just started waking up. I guess they said when they first brought him back in the back area and he saw Shelby he got SO excited. They put both of them in cages next to each other so they can be near each other until Mack goes home tomorrow. I'm SO relieved that he came through ok, that's my biggest fear that something will happen while the dogs are under anesthesia.

I'm so glad to hear the operation went well. I have to be very careful with Max under anesthesia because Anatolians are very sensitive to it. Wow, I didn't realize Shelby was at the same vet. That's great they can be next to each other, how comforting for both of them.

I'm sure she's just bored and she will be ok. Boris was pretty bored as you describe before we got Tips too. How old is she again?
Boris was neutered a few weeks ago. He stayed overnight too, got dehydrated though so they had to give him an IV and keep him longer. I thought he would be tired when we picked him up but he rushed on us, his old usual self... As soon as he was outside he did the biggest pee I've ever seen, I bet the poor thing had been holding it for a long time not to go in his crate :(
It wasn't bad though, there were 3 stitches, the problem is that he was chewing them so they had to give him one of those huge elizabethan collars, and it kinda sucked for a week. He kept getting it stuck everywhere, couldn't play with his toys, we couldn't take him for walks etc. Other than that, you couldn't have guessed that he had been neutered.
I'm glad you're going to get your own house... Your landlord seems like an idiot (to be polite).
How is Mack going?

Hannah is 4 months old. This is the first time she has been an only dog since we brought her home. She's always had other dogs to play with. Yeah, I go to the same vet for ALL my animals. I have a running tab there, so I'm sure that he would just add the neuter onto Shelby's bill (which I REALLY don't want to see). We are glad to be getting our own house as well. We don't like our landlord on bit, he doesn't seem very trustworthy to us the more we deal with him. I haven't seen Mack all day today, since I dropped him off. I'm pretty sure he's alright and there's nothing wrong. The vet hasn't called to say anything is the matter.

Dogs can indeed mourn and grieve! Bimmer still mourns his Buffy. He would barely eat for months. He was inconsolable and wouldn't respond with enthusiasm to anything at all until about two weeks after we brought Shiva home. He will still cry if we talk about her.
Shelby has been gone from home for several days and trust me, Hannah knows there was something badly wrong! Now Mack is gone . . . of course Hannah is upset. Reassure you as much as possible and try to distract her. Poor little girl!
That is so wonderful that the vet thought to put Mack's kennel next to Shelby! It will do wonders for both of them, especially Shelby!

I'm doing my best to keep her occupied, she seems to be a little better. She still goes to the spot next to our bed that Mack will lay until I tell him he can come up on the bed. She actually had a REALLY good training session a few minutes ago. I think she's exhausted now, she's laying belly up on my feet. I get to pick up Mack tomorrow afternoon so I'm sure she'll be THRILLED to have her big brother back. Maybe I will take her with to visit Shelby for a few minutes. I'm thinking they will let Shelby come home soon. The nurse told me she was doing great. She's up and about now. I'm sure Shelby is getting pretty homesick too, the nurse at the vets said she wagged her tail more than they've ever seen her wag the moment she saw Mack (and she's usually not too interested in Mack.

I'm so happy to hear Shelby is doing well in recovery. I do hope she will be able to come home soon. I bet if she saw Hannah, it would be a nice surprise.
