Anyone know about ear ablation surgery?

Hi...

The poodle I recently adopted apparently had an ear ablation surgery on both ears. One side is completely closed, but the other has a tiny hole that opened up at some point after the surgery, now she has an infection in that ear!

Treating the infection is proving to be difficult, since it's hard to get the topical antibiotic into her ear through that tiny little hole and she keeps throwing up the oral antibiotics!

My vet says another surgery might be necessary, but we can't do that until the infection's cleared up...

Has anyone had problems like this after ear ablation surgery? If so, I'd love some input (or a pep talk!).

Thought I'd post an update, in case anyone else dealing with ear issues could benefit from the solution I found. I struggled for months with different topical and oral antibiotics to try to resolve the ear infection, but everything caused vomiting and my dog was miserable.

I found a product online called Zymox Otic which has been amazing. It's OTC, cheap, easy to use and my dog doesn't mind being treated with it (she hated when I used the other topical meds... poor thing would run and hide when it was time to put them in! :().

You can buy it on Amazon.com... there are tons of reviews there, too, so you can get an idea of the results people are getting.

Definitely worth a try for chronic, resistant ear infections!

Ooops... guess I didn't make it clear that it HAS worked. I've been using it for a couple of months and it's keeping her ear infection under control better than any of the heavy-duty antibiotics did.

Since her ear is abnormal after the surgery, she'll need to be on the stuff forever, I suspect, since the vet said she's need to be on antibiotics for the rest of her life. The thing that's nice about the Zymox is that it's not an antibiotic so it's apparently very safe... there are none of the negative effects of long-term antibiotic use.

My vet gave me Zymox and then I bought over the internet also. I use it in their ears for 5-8 days and then rinse out with ear cleaner. It does help to get all the dirt and wax out of the ears.
