View Full Version : The great Zaphod mystery
So I'm stumped on this dog, lol. I think I might have an idea of his breed mix, but I wanna know what you guys think, first. Now that I have decent pictures of him not looking scrawny.
Zaphod's under a year old. He's about 26" at the shoulder and 65lbs, though technically he should probably be around 70-75. It doesn't seem like he's done growing.
His temperament is.. odd. It's changing so much right now that it's hard for me to pinpoint anything except he has a strong desire to protect what he thinks is his. I don't like using the "D" word but he's very dominant, and a little pushy with other dogs. He hates strangers, though I think that's probably due to a lack of socialization more than inherited temperament. Nevertheless, he's not an affectionate dog with anyone but me.
He's high energy and fairly neurotic if he isn't sufficiently exercised.
Guesses?

His movement at a trot is kinda different, you can't really see it in this picture but this gives you an idea of his movement.

This is an awful picture but it gives you a decent idea of his front assembly.

My guess is a very big version of the "Border Stack" http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/b/borderstack.htm That 3rd picture reminds me so much of him.
Or maybe some Great Dane?
O/T: Let me know when you find out date for NC :D

In this pic, he looks kinda Mastiffy in the body anyway IMO...
Maybe shepherd/lab/mastiff of some kind ROFL  :lol-sign:
I have no clue
Doberdaneadoxer? (Dobe/Dane/Lab/Boxer????)

I see Shepherd... Seems a little small for a Dane.... Right about the hieght to have some German shepherd in him.... Maybe a GSD, boxer/dober/ some other short haired breed....

Purebred mutt. Seriously. I have been staring at the pictures and couldn't pin point a single breed. I don't see Lab, unless it's way back in the generations. Too long in the legs and not enough substance.
So, he has me stumped. :)

I vote there's some Dobe.. maybe even some Dane.

Agreed! Gotta love those purebred muttlies!
Labra, I KNOW! Not that I care that much about his breed, but it's so fun to try to pinpoint something. By default, there's probably shepherd, pit bull and "lab" (the smallish black dogs with whip tails and thin coats that people here call Labrador Retrievers) in him because that's in practically every mutt born on the streets here. A friend suggested Dutch Shepherd, and as far as his body goes, he DOES resemble one (though with a heavier, more masculine looking head)... but that seems a way exotic for a pound puppy.
Jess, he's getting broader in the chest every day, it seems. I'm definitely seeing a mastiffy look to him, but he just doesn't have the SIZE.
Thanks guys for the input! I should do one of those DNA tests for him, LOL

LOL @ the DNA tests. If its for fun go for it, if you are doing it cause you really want to know.. well our guesses will likely be as accurate. (well or at least close, and free)

Akita/Lab/Dane
LOL, Dekka, I know. :D I have a friend who sent in a test on her Border Collie and it came back as an Aussie/Chihuahua mix.
Akita! Interesting. What makes you guys say that?

OMG RD that is funny (see they are good for fun) My friend has an akita..I don't see any akita, I do see the dane, and maybe GSD

Akitas have a color pattern like that...black overlaying silver fawn...with the black face. It's not an overly common pattern in other breeds that I have seen. he may break more of the underlying color as he gets older. Akita's with that color are usually born black and start breaking color around late puppyhood...some are almost totally fawn by adulthood...but many remain quite dark. The Japanese call it 'Kuro-Goma'.
The cheekiness...and he gaits very similarly as well.
This dog is a known confirmed Akita/Lab...and you can see that the Akita is hard to see..it does not alwas carry thru strongly...the temperament certainly fits as well.

Oooh Hounded that's interesting, thanks! I've always wondered where that coloration could've come from, because it doesn't seem entirely GSD...

The color, definitely. Here's a pic of my old Pit/Akita, and she had that sable-ish fur on her sides.

I'm not sure about breed, but for some reason he reminds me of Bohdi!
Oooh, you guys are exactly right about the color. Those pictures of the Akita and mixes depict Zaphod's color a lot better than my pictures of him do.
Akita would explain a great deal of his temperament, too.

I say it's time to try out one of those fancy DNA tests! :D
He looks like he has some slightly splayed out dobe feet:p
Whatever he is he is cute!

I may have hound on the brain, but i see hound. i think he is an Akita/Coonhound mix. He has hound legs, and hound feet, and a hound stance. There are houndy features in his face too.
Would Doberman account for that as well? Or instead of...?
I'd be really curious...I do see a lot of Dobe, hound as well...
Akita would explain the mask and ruff though...
Dobe could account for some of his temperament traits, too. He's a little more goofy than an Akita, but I see more of the serious Akita temperament when he's "on guard" (which is far too often, but he's relaxing a bit more every day.) He's very quiet.

I love his looks, and especially the athletic stance. Maybe that's why I see hound. You know how I feel about hounds.
Dobekita Hound?
What about his back end though? I see Dane, though I guess that could just as easily be Dobe or hound...
Drmom, I see hound in him too. Not sure what kind, but that tail of his screams hound to me, and his hind end might too.
Zoom, I dunno much about his rear, considering it's got a long way to go before it's adequately muscled again. Dane is a definite possibility too, but he IS rather small for a Dane mix.
I can't wait until he's done growing and filling out. He's a stunning dog any way you look at it though.
I can't either. I think he's a really good looking boy. Pictures don't capture him quite as well as I'd like...

He has always reminded me of an Anatolian Shepherd... call me crazy, but he does! He's a really handsome boy, and very unique, that's for sure.

Grace and I both think he resembles Walker in alot of his features and temperment LOL. We have discussed that mix with it LMAO.
He could be a black sable Walker clone, that's for sure! Anatolian is another really good guess (and not far off the mark for the local dogs, there are lots of LGDs that roam with the free-range flocks around here) thanks Erica!

Exept for Walkers satellite ear LMAO.
Zaphod's do the satellite thing a LOT, Breeze. Usually after he's been sleeping. He had one ear up yesterday and I swear he looked just like Walker.

I saw a little bit of GSD in his face, mostly the way his facial structure is under the skin. When I saw his legs, I thought maybe some sighthound? He has such graceful legs, in my opinion anyway, his body structure doesnt look quite right to have much, if any dutch shepherd though...
