Before you all moan, I'd have said poodle if it was a poodle, but it wasn't. It was a rottie - it's a fact.

Yeah, but the kid left in charge of the baby was 7 years old...not 15, the older child, 16 was upstairs in the house, not in arms length of the infant.
Have a dog is like having a swimming pool, you don't leave children unattended in it.
I can remember a panicked phone call from another golden friend, she told me about how she had put her new baby in the swing and turned her back to do something. She had left the baby in the presence of her 6 month old golden puppy. She heard the baby scream and ran to find the infant being picked up by her HEAD by the golden puppy who was about to tote her off to a corner probably to see how loud she could make it squeak or pull out the stuffing. The baby was fine but she had four parge dimples in her temples for a while.
ANY DOG of ANY BREED should NEVER be left alone with an infant or small child. I don't care how good the dog is with the kid. Dogs are dogs, they are not people, they do not understand the "rules". I feel terrible for the parents but at the same time, they are at fault...

I wasn't glorifying it - but I have been a 15 year old in charge of younger kids.

You asked where the parents where. I failed to see in the story where the parents said - hey kids, go play with foo foo in the yard :D

It's life. People aren't perfect.

They only had the dog 6 months, so yeah, they should have been more careful.

But have a BIT of heart, they just watched their baby being torn apart by a dog.

Another tragic and preventable death.

You only have to look at the family. They are always the same type of people. In this case, an 18-year-old mother, leaving her one-year-old baby in the hands of a 7-year-old whilst a 'guard dog' Rottweiler who remains in yard 24/7 is loose. A disaster waiting to happen.

You can't blame the dog - only the idiot owners. This dog was NOT a pet. They had only owned the dog for 6 months so the dog was likely to have come from a rescue situation. I guarantee that the Rottweiler was anything but well bred. Then you must consider that the dog lived outside. The article says that the dog had interacted with children and showed no previous signs of aggression. Well, that means NOTHING. We don't know the dogs background, how much socialization is received, how much (or perhaps more accurately, how little) attention it received on a daily basis, how often it was taken out, etc.

Unfortunately, this sort of people get these breeds of dogs for all the wrong reasons. When was the last time you heard of a well bred, well looked after family Rottweiler mauling anyone? until these ignorant people learn, more lives will be lost.

I cant even Imagine the effects this is going to have on the 7 year old. or for that matter the guilt that the 16 year old is feeling. can you even think about growing up with that kind of experience?
