I'm going to be going to the national speciality (since its near my parents place) and I've tentatively settled on this breed as a serious canidate for my second dog. But although I've known and adored many Pembrokes . . . I don't know Cardis as well . . . thoughts, commments? Know one? Have one? Wouldn't have one if it fell out of the sky?

They're different than the Pems - the Pems are spunky and snarky, and the Cardis are a bit calmer and more serious in comparison - or, at least that's what I've found. The Cardis are larger and more bulky as well.
This weekend I got SO to agree to a blue merle Cardi someday... just as long as it has blue eyes!

You NEED a merle dog Sizz. I've only met Cardi puppies at a show, so I'm not much help either. Though they were some **** cute and sweet puppies.

Its the calmer, more serious nature and the slightly greater size that attract me to the breed. I love Pems . . . I'd like something similar but a bit less hyper.

Corrie, there was a blue merle Cardi bitch at the Des Moines show - a show prospect that was recently graded pet quality and her breeder was looking for the right home for her. I reeeeallly wanted to take her home, she was breathtaking and had the best personality. Oh, how I HATE being at my current dog limit!!!! ;)

Cardis also aren't as structurally suited for athleticism as pems, and for some reason I rarely see cardis doing any performance events. I would suggest being sure that if you want to do anything with the cardi, that he has ancestors who have done the things you want to do and has been bred for it.
Cardis also tend are more reserved with strangers than the pems.

Darn you people, you got me looking at corgis and there's a breeder about an hour from me that has a Pembroke tri fluffy for sale... :mad:

Fozzie is half Cardigan... and, I definitely plan on getting a blue merle Cardigan, next.
I have 2 Cardis on my Flyball team, and I've met several Cardis. All of them are awesome dogs! All have been very friendly, clownish, and all of the dogs I've met have had a good amount of drive. They do *seem* less bouncy than Pemmies, and less vocal, but that could be due to many variables... Pemmies are obviously MUCH more popular, and there tends to be way more bad breeders of Pembrokes. I think the lack of Cardis in performance events is mostly because there is simply a lack of Cardis, period.
The biggest dilemma I've noticed with finding a good Cardigan breeder, is the total lack of them. I was set up to buy a blue girl from Pawcific, right before I adopted Fozzie... and they are in Washington. I only know of one reputable breeder in California, and they don't even breed Blues. Many Cardi breeders are divided, in that they only breed Brindles or they only breed Blues (both breed tris and reds). Brindles are not supposed to be bred to Merles. But, if you're willing to travel, or you're lucky enough to have a local breeder, that shouldn't be a problem. I guess I am extraordinarily picky, though, so it's even harder for me!... I will only consider a breeder that shows AND works AND feeds raw. hehe.
I am soooo jealous that you get to go to the national specialty! =D That is a whole lot of Cardi cuteness!

Well, I'd be looking for a breeder at the agiity, obediance, Rally events . . . not so much becuase I'm necessiarily going to do that (though if I'm going to do anything, it would be those) but because those are the skills I would want my dog to bring to the table.
And you are right about a shortage of breeders . . . though the DC area has its own Cardi club . . . but they don't seem to have any events coming up . . . I've thought about calling one of the breeders near by . . .but I figure she'll be at the speciality, and I'd rather see everyone together before I start building a relationship with someone. If that makes any sense . . .
And as for cute Corgis . . . my mother, because she lives near by (I'm actually going to be visiting my parents, the show is a sidce trip) will be coming with me . . . and she's told me already not to let her get a Corgi . .. she says she won't be able to resist when she sees them!

You could have had her and DIDN'T run off with her? Oh my. I squealed and decked my friend Becky when I saw those pups. Their ears were bigger than they were.

Cardis are great dogs, but I really do prefer Pems myself. :)
I am so lucky there is a show here every summer that is made up almost entirely of corigs:) I love the pems and the bf loves the cardis. We found a lady we really wanted a cardi pup from and then she decided this or next year would be her last breeding and that will be to early for us:(
Other than that one show every year I have seen a cardi maybe once? they are not very common around here. Pems on the other hand are everywhere!
