I take my dog Kyle a walk in the fields behind my house most mornings. This morning he was naughty and killed a rabbit which really upset me. Does anyone know how to stop him from doing this again?

Thank you

The only way to do that is to keep him on a leash. Dogs are predators, they have prey drive (some more than others), this is a natural behavior.

Pretty much agree with Sweet, there. It's natural.. you can't train natural instincts out (or at the very least, I believe that you can not). It'd be like taking my guard dog and trying to train the guarding instincts out of her... that doesn't make sense. :)

You can train like crazy. Start by teaching a leave it at home, and slowly start making the criteria more difficult. This will take a lot of time. But if your dog has a long history of calling off fun things to high rewards, it is possible. In the mean time keep your dog on leash so he can't get the bunnies.

OTOH mine kill and eat the bunnies, which is fine by me. Means less raw for me to buy, and we have an over abundance of rabbits running around.

or teach the leave it command.

My boy is allowed to eat anything he catches or chases. Mostly rabbits and squirrels. He does eat the coons he trees too but after I clean and process them.
