Have you heard Weird guesses about what's a pedigree?

They are some people who don't have any idea about what is a pedigree, they say thigs like:

"I think my dog COULD have a pedigree, so I'm goin to take it to the vet, so the vet can see IF the dog has it or not"

"If my dog has a pedigree? can you see (by only looking at it) if my dog has one?"

"Pedigree? is that a food right? my dogs eat it that."

"The dog is purebreed, so is a pedigree dog even if they didn't gave me any papers when I got it"

i always liked the people who snobbishly tell you that their dog is "pedigreed", as if that makes it something elite.

I agree with Corgi.. Who cares really? I honestly don't. I love my dogs for their personalities. I don't treat the Papered dogs and different then my mutts.

I love any dog, whether they have papers or not.

Haha! yeah!! but this is bit the guilt of some people that think if you have a pedrigree dog you HAVE to show it.

sadly 97% of the people in my country think that.

That's why they think a dog from a pet shop with pedigree is a show dog :o

Since many of the people here that know I whant a show dog, they recomend me to buy from the pet shop. :(

They say me that also when I ask the people in shows where they broght the dog they have.

Of All the dogs I had none of them had a pedigree, even only one of them was purebreed, now I whant one with it because I whant to show.

Most people in the US also think that if a dog has a pedigree, it means it's show/breed worthy, too. They think a pedigree is a very clear sign of good breeding, good health, and on and on. =P

There are a lot of misconceptions on what a pedigree is - or what a "papered" dog is. Unfortunately there are many registries who will provide a registration or pedigree just based on whatever a person tells them (the breeder could make up several generations so that there's something written down as a "pedigree").

But on the other hand, a true pedigree is a very valuable document. It gives the background of a dog - and one fully filled out includes health certifications, titles, etc. If it's true (and most of it can be researched) then you've got a good start into understanding the genetics and potential of the dog you have. And if you're breeding, you should absolutely understand this - especially when it comes to health (in my opinion, at least).

So when someone starts talking "pedigree" to me, I'll ask them what kind of background their dog has. Is it working or show lines? Is it linebred? On who? What kind of health certifications did the parents have? Grandparents? What kind of titling is in the last 2-3 generations? Working titles, or just conformation? You figure out very quickly how much a person knows when you start asking these questions, and the person often figures out very quickly how much they DON'T know .. *L* .. and hopefully they will go home, do some research, and maybe decide not to breed their "papered" dog after all.

It's always interesting - sometimes funny, sometimes sad - to see how uneducated the general public is on dogs. What's amazing to me is how hard they will try to make you think they know what they're talking about! I've been told dozens of times that my sable shepherds can't be purebred because they're not the typical black and tan, or that my small chows must be "miniatures" because chows are supposed to be big (even though mine are within the breed standard).

Ahhh, people. They'd be much more fun if they had fur and tails.
