I am told that to remove the hair at the end to the exit of my boy's penis will cause his urine to spray on his belly, do you all cut the hair off or leave it? I noticed some of your dogs who were in porn shots on my other topic LMFAO had no hair, was that naturally bald or did you cut it? Mine has a long strip of hair which I am not sure if to remove it or not.

The groomer at work tells people it should never be cut off. It directs the pee in the right direction, or something like that. But I don't get it, I mean short haired dogs don't pee all over themselves....

Buster doesn't have long enough hair... never pee'd on himself. But once after a very long car trip he pee'd for like a minute straight then walked away with it still spraying LOL!

I think I would leave well enough alone, so long as it doesn't bother the dog. But, if it causes the dog to smell, or have urine scald, that's another matter.

Well Orson is very short coated but he still has 5-10 hairs that protrude from the end...........perhaps all dogs have this? (NOT going to check around for ya, LOL)

I don't know a thing about this topic, and I have NEVER trimmed Orson's private hairs or ANY other dog I have owned, LOL........but I have never owned a really hairy dog becaue they aren't my cup of tea.

(and Orson was the one in the porn shot..........hehehehehehehe)

I need a vacation or something. I read the first sentence of this thread and thought the OP was talking about human boys.

I thought, "HOLY CRAP! Are they talking about circumcision?? Mine NEVER had hair on the ends of their hoses!"

IF he is just a pet - you can trim it off.. if you are planning on showing.. I suggest only trimming it slightly so it isn't one long string that hangs down past the rest of his fur so you can see it.

Riot is very fuzzy and I'd never think of trimming his coat back - he is built the way he is for a reason.

b/c you dont have a clip breed I'd leave it alone.

that peeing direction thing is a bunch of here say though lol hair doesn't help direct its flow..

Riots come in some days and hes a mess lol Other times hes fine.. (TM - Tosca likes that eh lol)

Yup! In 20 years of grooming I've only heard of groomers doing this in the past few years and I always thought it was ridiculous. Plus, I'm too OCD to ever leave a long hair on the end of a penis, lol, so no dogs leave the shop with a rat tail on the peepee or woowoo. :lol-sign:

LOL exactly Giny!

When I groomed - we always trimmed the hair there for the "pets" at home.. just makes the owners job a little easier ;)

If hair did direct its flow.. maybe thats why human boys tend to MISS the bowl every now and then!! haha

We get Benji's hair trimmed up and it doesn't seem to bother anything. If we don't trim it once in a while it gets all icky and knotted.

By the way, the title of this thread should be called "sheath hair or no sheath hair" since its technically the sheath the hair is on! :p

Hairs on the sheath even out and don't appear "long" when the dog is adult...it's a puppy thing, at least in Beagles and Akitas. Girls have them as well as pups a long curl of hair at the vulva. But when they are adults it's simply not there to the same extent, or at all.

When showing a male Beagle the sheath is shaved down and that includes and stray hairs at the end. No issue with urination has ever arisen here due to that.

Thanks for the comments. I had initially cut some of it off when I got him as it was extremely long and pointed, now it is a big bushy and uniformed. He gets urine tangles just above the willy wonka on his belly. His easter eggs get trimmed as he tends to tangle there very badly also around the anus. I have to keep that clipped or it is real messy if he has a soft doodoo. I try to wash his willy wonka with a light wash often to avoid the peepee smell. The anus gets a daily wiping with a damp wash cloth. The hairy breeds can be really cute, but terribly messy. So far he has not had the runs and I hope he never gets it either. I dont know when he starts to lift the legs what the pee situation with be with his willy wonka....will have to wait and see:lol-sign:

my guys all get "sanitary trims" often.

Dodger gets VERY long hair there, while i dont shave ti clean (hes too much of a fidget) i do trim it very short...otherwise urine gets "stuck" in the hair making it grose and can lead to infections (you try cleaning a male who "marks" frequently after every time lol)
Vixie and Ruby get the hair in that area there also trimmed for the same reason.

then they are trimmed (or in rubies case shaved) around the anus...

I leave the hair on all my poms. I never trim it. Even around the backend I don't trim. I don't like seeing the butthole if I don't have to LMAO. Once in a while they soil or get a turd caught in there but not often enough for me to worry about trimming.

Max was born with a naturally hairless weenie, He never peed on himself. I never liked the dogs with hairy penises, if they are small and sit on you after they pee their fur is wet and it gets on you but I doubt I'd clip it off if my dog had it.

I had to cut down Smudge's when he got a uti. I was told that it may retain bacteria I'm trying to eliminate. While his coat is short, he doesn't pee on himself. 'Short' being about 3" of fur so far. I was told when he gets a decent coat going on though, the fur strip will help it point down some, rather than back into his long as heck coat. Figure it's not an issue for most people.

He pees on his front feet when the puddle gets too big rather than on belly so far.

All I can say is if you've ever had a Shih tzu (sp?) with its hair all long and let it get tangled ... it's bad, I mean really bad. The hair on the willy wasn't the prob. It was around the back that was a problem. About 10 yrs ago I babysat my mom's dog for her. I gave him table scraps. Why, because I thought all dogs should have them. Well he went out to potty. He came back in dragging his butt on the carpet. I was on my way to see what the prob was when he stood up an shook. Well poo flew every where. It stuck on the blinds and the walls. It was caked on his rear and tangled in the hair. GROSS . It was he!! to clean up. Lessons learned. BRUSH BUTCHIE'S BUT OFTEN ! LMAO Its alot funnier now than it was then.

yeah but it's got to make it a little less enjoyable for her if their not clean. Think of all the infections she could pick up.

Tosca uses protection. I told her, Tosca if you are going to be a slut in this day and age, you need to have them wear two condoms and duct tape.

For all other things, there's pennicillin.

I used to have a chinchilla who had a ton of hair ring issues... we'd have to check him and pull off the hair rings almost every day :yikes:

I've had male dogs over the years and we never trimmed their package. We never had any trouble with any of them having "flow" trouble or infections. I guess I'd be afraid of trimming them and have them move at the last second and they'd get a circumcision :yikes:

man everyone's got a different opinion in here.

I don't trim Milo's...It looks a little yellow (talking the long fur right near the top, none on his sheath or belly really), but it doesn't seem to bother him or me.

OH MY GOD. I never wanted a Chinchilla before, but now I know I never want one. How the heck do they GET hair rings? And do I even want to know how you remove them? Those poor boys.

Middie doesn't have a whole lot. But it cracked me up when he came back from his neuter and his penis had a poodle cut. No, I'm not kidding at all lmao. They shaved from the base to about an inch from the tip, so he had this pom-pom of fur right at the tip... poor guy.

How educational. I never knew that about chins.

I've had more females than males, but have never trimmed a male's penis.

Never. I let my boys keep their private fur.

yeah i had to do it by myself. the easiest way i found was to put my hand and wrap it around where the front arms are and lay him backwards on a table or my bed and that way he was fully supported and i had a free hand. took a while to get use to

If I remember correctly your dog is just a puppy? At some point he will lose that long wispy hair around his penis but it doesn't hurt to trim it off because it can harbor bacteria and cause infections. I have been a dog groomer for over 12 years and they don't call it a sanitary clip on hairy dog for nothing ;) . FYI, a sanitary clip is cleaning and trimming all the hair on the underside (penis included) to reduce matting and urinating on themselves :D .
