Well I'm curious (no I don't have any intentions of breeding right now my dogs are fixed :p).

I've been reading a bunch on genetics and have had more then a few people mention they don't look back more then 2-3 generations because the decision to breed a dog should be based much more on the merrits of the individual dog then on his parents or grandparents. These are of course influential but by no means make it a good breeding.

So I just thought I'd ask people on here... when you look at a dog for breeding how much value do you place on parentage/lines and how far back do you look?

Generally the 2nd and 3rd generations will have the largest impact on the puppies after the actual sire and dam. I looked back five generations while I was researching a stud dog for Alice.

I agree that if you don't start with quality then it doesn't matter what is behind the dog, you won't get quality puppies.

Your first 3 generations make the most impact in your breeding program. Problems in the grandparents will usually show up in the grand kids.

Not always a problem. Thus, why Im doing a tight tight line breeding with my upcoming litter. If grandpups look like grandparents, I will be a VERY happy camper!:lol-sign:

Oh no and wasn't meant to insuated only problems. You're right, the benefits are often that the grandparents will influence the looks as well, which as you know can be a very good thing ;)

I loved to keep track ..... Some of the lines from my 1st Golden in 1949 were still going strong in the 1990s .

I like to know what I'm dealing with up to 4 generations back-even further if I can. It helps me get an idea of where the breeder was going, with respect to type.

I look at the first 5 generations, and even further back to take note of the most influential dogs in the pedigree. If a dog appears 50 times in a pup's pedigree, I want to know as much about that dog as I do about the sire/dam and grandparents.
