I'm just curious. Some dogs in my rescue seem to have more dominant personality types, with both other dogs and people. But I don't really know. I'd like to be able to determine what dogs need more experienced owners, and some of the dogs are boarded, so it's hard to tell. I'm not around them all the time.

I've noticed that some dogs in the rescue do the Paw on the Shoulder thing, which I assume is indicating that they are trying to assert their dominance. Growling or fighting sometimes ensues after that... But I don't know if that's what that is. I associate staring and stiff, up high and tail/head held high type postures with dominance. What other kind of postures and signals do dogs send out?

Anybody have any info or links? I tried Googling it a little bit, but I didn't really come up with anything useful.
