I'm generally a fan of DogWise.com, but I'm having a hard time understanding how their "sound socialization" CD is any different from flooding.
Here's the URL:

Is this really humane? What are the odds it would actually help for a sound sensitive adult dog?

it's not flooding if done correctly- you start it at a volume that is low enough that the dog does not react, and gradually increase the volume while working with the dog by rewarding calmness as the dog is desensitized to it.
as to how effective it is with an adult dog, i don't know. i don't have a lot of faith in that kind of thing with *storm* phobic dogs, because there are so many aspects to a thunderstorm- pressure change, smell change, etc. it may be helpful with dogs who are purely sound-sensitive.

I think the idea is to play is very softly at first, praising your dog for being calm (unless you are using it to prevent sound sensitivity, in that case no praise is really needed). Then over time slowly turn it up until you can have it to real life volume without your dog freaking out.
EDIT: sorry i posted at the same time as elegy :p
