Hello. We just got our puppy about a week and a half ago. This is the first pup we've had in a long time-our old dog was 14 and we got her at around 6 mos old. Our current pup is a lab/australian shepherd mix and is 11 weeks old. We adopted her from a vet and on the way home, we stopped at petsmart and got a bag of puppy chow. I thought Purina was one of the best. I was checking online to find out how much to feed her (the bag says 1-2/3 to 5 cups for her age/weight. WTH?) and found that Purina is not so great after all. So on sunday we bought a small bag of Nutro Natural Choice because we can get it locally (nothing else at all locally other than the grocery store brands, diamond, and nutro). After more reading we have decided to switch again even though we'll probably have to order online or drive an hour or more to get it. So anyway we've narrowed our choices down to Canidae (which I know I can get at a store about an hour's drive away) and Chicken Soup (which I can't find anywhere so would have to buy online). So once this bag is gone (minus some saved to mix for the transition) we'll be switching. We only started her on the puppy chow/natural choice mix on monday so we have quite a bit to go through (I'll probably not worry about finishing the puppy chow-I'll just pitch whatever's left or something unless anyone has a better suggestion). I am anxious to see how big this pup gets since she has large and medium breeds in her. I have 3 kids, two of which are becoming pros at scooping poop and walking Daisy and teaching her the sit command. She is a bit nippy but is learning quickly not to do that also. Anyway I've been reading and learning a lot here and at other pet forums.

I called a local dog supply (they have supplies for hunting dogs, I think) and asked if they had Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lovers or Dog Lovers Soul food (since they carry the cheaper Diamond foods). They had never heard of it. I actually hate calling places around here and asking for it because the name of it is SO long and no one has ever even heard of it. Canidae is supposed to put me in touch with their Indiana rep to see if he/she can help. Today Daisy started on 50/50 nutro and puppy chow. Her poops are noticeably more solid, darker and smaller just from the 25% mix for 3 days. Yay!!

Howdy. A wise lady from the north didn't like Nutro for her dogs but had won a year's supply of it. So, she donates it to her local shelter. I happen to feed Nutro but I tried another brand one time. Shadow had sneezing fits, 12 - 15 in a row, several times a day. I put him back on Nutro and the symptoms went away.

Point being, if you have food left over and you want to switch, go ahead and switch and donate the food you are not using anymore. It will make you feel good and help feed the dogs that have nothing, not even a home.

You can try and call any dog groomers in your area. Some groomers also carry dog food and they usually carry the better brands. That's where I could've gotten Canidae.
