View Full Version : The "We're Going Back to School and Need Support" Thread

I was talking with Kirst and it was apparent that we are both in supreme apprehension with our last year of our programs. We started to give each other some support and then decided that we should start a thread- it's going to be a long year for some of us. ;)
So this is your rant, your "I'm so angry I could smash the world to smithereens", your "I didn't get an A" your "I can't write one more paper!!" your "NO MORE BOOKS", your "is the semester done yet?" thread. A thread when all will be understood and your fellow Chazzers will probably agree and plot to take over the world to get rid of said schooling systems, lol.
Enjoy! ;)

I start tomorrow. I did great through middle school but my first year of high school I did so bad I might have destroyed my future. I want straight A's every term (hopefully I can then force my parents to foster a dog, I have not talked with them about this deal yet). I did the wort in English (usually my best subject) and best in Math (usually my worst). I just hope my teachers are not evil.

Well- I'm about to get ready and head in for a year of tortu- err, edumacation. :yikes:
Just got an email from my advisor, advising me that I have too many classes. Reeeaaallly? I guess she forgot me telling her that at the end of last semester. 7 classes. Right. I'm crazy and not all there some of the time, but I'm not completely wacko. I'm dropping one, but still, that's a big load.
Anywho-Jess gave me an awesome idea for my thesis (;) ) and I'm going to speak to my advisor about it and I also have my research class tonight. very exciting if it can be done- you'll have to wait and see if it can be if you're interested. ;)
I still have major anxiety about all of it and my heart isn't 100% into this endeavor, but I've got to at least give it a shot...
Wish me luck and hope that I don't drop dead from anxiety. Please. :D

I actually don't know exactly what I will be doing yet, but they liase with lots of agencys, so I think I'll be dealing with the whole spectrum of problems.
I'm kind of wanting to look at anti-social behaviour and substance misuse (note to self - visit library next week!). I'm not sure though... I'm really not..!!! And I KNOW they want me to have an area I'd like to go into...
I'm just worried I'll be in over my head... I'm no longer a student apparently... Now we're called SWITs!! Social Workers in Training! Very posh.

So I started college as an AnSci/Pre-vet major. I then switched colleges and majors, and moved on to Graphic Design. Now I'm really considering majoring in Psychology.
I can get my dream career if I stick with Graphic Design. I love Psychology though (and Biology/Animal Science, too...), and I most likely would still be able to get my dream job with a degree in Psychology. Pre-vet is definitely not an option for where I really would love to work, so that's not much of a choice anymore.
I've got some thinking to do.

So... its my second week this semester and I don't like any of my classes. I'm taking ALG 027 MTWR, ENGL 162 MWF, and Intro to Sociology MWF. On T/R I also have Intro to ECE - which is completely dumb because its what I did in my junior and senior year of high school because I went to a joint vocational school for ECE for two years
My Soc teacher is from Africa, and he's really cool, but I'm having a really hard time understanding him lol. Plus the begining work is pretty boring, scientific method, statistics and stuff. Real hard, and real exciting
My English teacher is a fruit cake. He says "anywho" and rambles about video games and brainstorming. We have 9 Cinderella stories to read and summarize by Friday. Which I also did at the JVS...
I'm also MAD as heck, because the professor just told me last Thurs that the classes that I'm supposed to be exempt from (along with 3 or 4 other students in the same Intro to ECE class) are out the window. Apparently, my instructor of ECE at the JVS let the credential hours "expire", therefore making the classes that we took for the past 2yrs, that counted as several college credits, useless. Needless to say we are all calling and complaining to that instructor, and she is not calling anyone back. I am calling her supervisor tomorrow . . . They WILL fix this, or .... .... I don't even know what to say . . . :o

That's odd- that classes after 5 run on Tuesday? What's with school starting in the middle of the week anyways? My first day was today and it's so weird starting in the middle of the week. Why can't we stat next week after the holiday? I mean, really?

I think I'm actually going to have fun this school year... My AP history class is the most interesting, and my teacher seems pretty cool even though he's a... raiders fan... one of the kids is gonna bring in a ps2 and we're gonna play the teacher on Madden. If we beat him, we get extra credit points...
The only bad part is that we are giving 3 hours of homework, I much rather just be given the tests and skip the whole homework part. I already know most of the stuff they're teaching. I'm just excited to debate about current events, and hear about the whole global warming green house gases stuff (can you believe they're gonna talk about that in history? lol). I love hearing about how the corporations are responsible for destroying the earth and such.

I don't even know what to say to this... maybe I'll sleep on it, lol.
Friday he lectured, and then asked a question and NO ONE responded. We sat in silence for several minutes. He got up, and then sat down and said that we could sit there in silence for 10mins for all he cared, it didn't bother him. We sat there for a good 7mins until a student spoke up.
I wouldn't have cared either. Needed to catch up on some Zzzz's
 It's annoying that I paid for this class . . . to sit in silence!
:lol-sign:
Whoa. Big mess up. You don't let up on them. That needs to be fixed. They can't waste your time, or your money, like that.
Heck yes. I called my former lab instructor several times, and left messages - she never called me back! Only when I called her supervisor did I get ahold of the instructor. She claimed that the contract didn't have dates on it, so she didn't know how it could be expired. Then she said if it is "expired" why did the college not get in contact with the JVS..?... And then gave me a bunch of BS on how she missed me, etc etc  *pukes*
So I talked to my college professor about it again(who is the director of the ECE ed courses) and she claimed that she herself tried repeatedly to get ahold of my JVS teacher herself. Irritated, I called the JVS supervisor again. The supervisor called me back and reassured me that they will handle this... She said that she had a copy of the contract, and was going to set up a meeting with herself and the other ECE teachers at the JVS, with the head of directors at the college to get it all sorted out. . .
I am still unsure of whether this is the answer they think I want to hear (them blowing me off?) or whether it is actually going to be taken care of. Regardless, I will be keeping on top of it until it is done. There are also 3 other students (that I know of) This year who are in the same situation, so they will be keeping up on it as well . ..
SO Irritating! *big sigh*
What is it with professors scheduling huge assignments to be turned in all around the same time? WTF. Like I have hours to work on each of their projects due at the same time... *grumble*

I knew I had a half hour break btwn my 2 classes..but what i didnt pay attn to, was that my 1st class ended a half hour early (at 10:30)...so for some dumb reason, i just assumed my next class was at 11.
Oh no. It started at 11:30.
I walked into a HUGE lecture hall...and the door was like RIGHT next to where the professor was teaching, so EVERYONE was looking at me...and I stood there for a few seconds trying to process everything. like "hmm, class technically hasn't started...why is he lecturing already?" "hmm...why is he talking about the geographical divide..that does NOT sound like exercise physiology..." OH CRAP!
sooo embarrassing!!

Eeeeek I have a class where we are being treated like HS students!! I kid you not. Its molecular bio. She drew a nucleotide and then asked someone to come up and circle the phosphate group. Then she goes on to tell us C-G's are paired and A-T's Like duh!!! Then she tells us that denaturing is the breaking down of DNA into single strands using heat. (duh..what does she think we did last year in DNA forensic's class last year. She told us it takes more heat to break the C-G hydrogen bonds...ya, and we know how to calculate what temp to yes...thank you very much!!!)
But the best (or the worst was our lab today) We had a lab on pipetting. No seriously. And then running our samples through the spec. She came with open toed shoes, and didn't know how to use the spec. We had to tell her where stuff was kept in the lab

I think I will cry if I have to read another page in Great Expectations. WHY did this book have to be assigned on the very first day of school.
We had a test about the first 20 chapters today, and out of 20 questions...I only answered 9 of them LOL. I felt totally stupid but this book is going way over my head, I feel like I'm reading a different language. I read it, but if someone were to ask me what I just read about, they would get an incredibly blank stare because I have nooo idea.
Ack, I knew I shouldn't have taken honors. It was just so easy last year I figured it would be the same this year. :o

My chem /zoology teacher was a college prof so she borrowed items from the college so we go to distract DNA and use pipettes and all the fun stuff before college and even other classes(she was the my favorite/ best teacher i ever had i would stay at her class during lunch to help her or to see a random experiment)

1st week of placement done and dusted.
LOTS of opportunities :D Still on induction, but making some great contacts. Been out on the community drop in bus (its a rural area with few links), met a whole host of people, and get to go into more agencies next week :D
Thinking about what I'd like to do in my time... I enjoy mental health and substance misuse.. and anti-social behaviour... So watch this space!!
Oh, and GOD how schools have changed since I went... We never had ANY of the links... such a good idea though.

I think I will cry if I have to read another page in Great Expectations. WHY did this book have to be assigned on the very first day of school.
Oh boy, I remember having to read that. Haaaated it--and normally I love to read! One of my high school English teachers loved Dickens, had done her thesis on him for her master's degree. *cringe* You can really tell he got paid by the word, that's all I'm saying.
Well, my school doesn't start until the 19th, but I'm cramming for a test already . . . When I first applied they said my program (natural resource science) was full and I would have to wait until the winter quarter to get into the classes specific to that program. Okay . . . I took some more "generic" classes in the meantime.
Then yesterday I find out they DO have room in the Natural Resources program . . . but you have to take a test to get into it. The very last test they're doing for the Fall quarter is on Monday, so I signed up for it. I also grabbed a practice test / study guide.
I blazed through the English portion of the test, no problem, but the math . . . er . . . Well, it's been eight years since I took a math course and with some problems I just stared and stared, racking my brains as I tried to remember what the formulas meant.
-2 | -3 -4 1| = ?
Question mark INDEED.
So I got "Teach Yourself Algebra" out of the library and I'm cramming. I'm especially dreading going over sine / cosine again . . . I could barely remember those when I was in an actual math class.

I didn't, and as much as I'd like to say it gets better, I still don't understand much of my mom's thought process. :p At least now I'm old enough to make my own decisions and ignore all of the crazy things she says.

So my Biology teacher wants us to learn aaaaall about bibliographies. So much that he is making us create a bibliography with 75 citations on it! :yikes:
The good news is that we don't have to actually do an essay . . . Just the bibliography, to teach us . . . the proper form, I guess. But couldn't we learn the proper form from doing a fifteen citation bibliography or something? Also, compared to the bibliographies I've seen in other sources, the form seems very odd and not standard. *grumblemutter*
I had to quit my full time job to go back to school and in despair signed up part time for Blockbuster video store, but now, mwahahaaaa, the local utility company called me talking about an interview for a part time temporary job (six months, flexible hours.) I go in to test my alphanumeric skills and Excel / Word skills tomorrow . . . I soooo hope I get it, it's close to my old wage, as opposed to living off minimum wage, which would barely cover the rent + monthly expenses.

I just need to suffer through this week then I have next week off. YES. :D
I'm ready to destroy my english teacher though. We finished Great Expectations... and now we are reading Rebecca. And I have a 700-word paper about Great Expectations due on Friday, sounds pretty fun, huh. I swear we will ALWAYS have a book to read in this class. And he's "thinking about" having us read David Copperfield over Christmas break. :yikes: That's almost 900 pages!!! In less than 2 weeks.
If it weren't for that stupid english class I'd have straight As. Grrr.
I also need to complain about photo; I can't roll film in bright light, I don't know how I'll pass this class when we're rolling it for real in pitch black.
I think the only class I don't totally hate is chemistry, which is amazing because unless it's biology, I normally SUCK at anything science related. Oh yeah... and I guess my cooking class isn't too bad, doesn't get any more awesome than baking cookies and cinnamon rolls. :p
