Most of the time when there is bickering and picking going on you all manage to work it out among yourselves with only a nudge here and there from the moderators.

And that’s as it should be - here.

There are plenty of places on the internet where the moderators keep viewpoints within a narrow range and set circumscribed boundaries for posting, and those places are fine, if you’re happy to hand over your rights to think and express yourself when you have a differing opinion, point of view, set of experiences so that no one gets their toes stepped on or their nose out of joint or has to be exposed to anyone else’s take on a subject. It’s also a good way to run things so that no one learns anything from anyone else, or is forced to examine their own set of opinions and beliefs or even has to stretch a tad to express themselves more clearly. Great places for the self-absorbed, the self-important to define and the rest to bleat in unison.

But that’s just not us.

Sure, it’s a pain in the ass to moderate some of the prize fights here. But it’s rare - if ever - that at least some of the participants don’t come out a little smarter, a little more thoughtful, a little more understanding and a little better as people when the final bell rings.

And when all is said and done, and one of us is falling apart, often it's the person who has been in the ring with that one and gone at it the hardest is one of the first to give a cyber-hug and a cyber-shoulder.

Now, tell me, what could be wrong with that?

That was a good old post that can remind us that our attitudes sometimes show through our posts, and if we're condescending and belittling, it doesn't get the point across that we're trying to make very well.......unless the point is that we don't think much of the poster we're addressing!!

Is good! Debate is ALWAYS good... But like many things, there have to be boundaries.

I always find it a bit sad when mods get involved in bickering though. And I have seen a few cases of that.

I understand - they have opinions too... but I kind of feel that a position of mod is a position of trust... and people have to feel confident to approach mods knowing that their query or gripe will be taken seriously. And in an UNBIASED manner.

If you want to bicker and bitch like us mere mortals... I think you should STAY a mere mortal.

And too that end, I think it is wise for mods to stay out of the bicker festivities... But of course - thats is just my lowly opinion ;)

Aussie Red

Going to say that I feel the mods are a great crew here and are people and forum members first and foremost. If they get in to the bickering it is fine by me. I have seen it and really don't mind it because they are forum members first and mods after they were members. If we want cold detached mods then Chaz needs to find some for that purpose alone and they need to mod and not participate. I am honored that I have become close to some of the mods and am in their daily lives as well as the forum one.

To Chaz mods never change who you are and how you do your job here you are great !!!

One of the reasons for having a number of mods is so that one mod doesn't have to shoulder the entire responsibility for one forum - and so that the mods can participate. Face it. If we were Stepford Mods this place would be a whole lot different . . . and those of you who enjoy it here, wouldn't.

And there was a lot of thought that went into asking the various mods to take on the responsibility. All of us are quite different - be design. That makes for a good diversity of opinions and styles so that none of us even inadvertently imposes our own views and personality on the forum, or its members. Kind of helps to guarantee some intellectual and emotional anarchy ;)

Great post, Renee...

That's why I love it here. I am on one forum where they do that. It drives me nuts. You can sure as hell bet that I wouldn't be staying if there wasn't so much great information to be had on it, but EVERYTHING gets censored.

Momof2Pups
08-14-2007, 06:48 PM
There's another forum I'm on that closes every thread and deletes every post that disagrees with the general consensus of the forum. It's pretty sad. Many topics are off-limits, and while there are many great people there I don't like it. I still want to be a person with opinions and be allowed to express them. I really appreciate the mods here and the freedom they/you give us to work out our problems instead of having to dive in if someone disagrees in some way. Sometimes people need a mod intervention when they won't chill out or there are severe unjustified personal attacks but a lot of the times people can work it out.

Aside from the friends I've made here, I stay because I love the freedom that the mods and admins give the members here. There are no banned topics, threads aren't locked willy-nilly and healthy debate is encouraged. What better way to get a broader view of things than to listen to everyone's point of view? Silencing the minority just because they disagree really irks me, and I consider Chazhound my internet home because it's the only dog forum I've found that encourages tolerance of others' opinions. Nobody is saying people need to agree all the time, but I think as long as someone can clearly and politely (within reason. everyone gets mad sometimes.) express their opinion, they are contributing something to the community.

Yay, Chazhound! :) lol

There are one or two other forums, one that I was on originally and for a long time. It use to be good. But with a rotation of moderators and admin, it has become the epitome of Stepford. There are scarcely more than 3 or 4 people on there at any given time and if you read a thread or post, you can be sure nothing new will have been added if you check back any sooner than 3 or 4 days. It's so dragging you can't imagine.

I'm a mod there also and I brought it up that is was way over moderated and one of the admin agreed with me, or so it was said and changes were going to be made. But nothing changed. Stepford all the way. In the mod forum there, it's all about nit picking one word or phrase someone said and should this be deleated and the person p.m'd....it's always very inoccuous stuff. Here, on the Chaz forum, it's mostly us mods talking about personal stuff, like, "I mowed the lawn today." Or....some gross dirty joke that we just can't post on the main forum. There is a limited amount of bitcing about who said what and should that be allowed. I mean, it comes up, but it's not so excessive like the Stepford forum. (s)

So, yes....to have an opinion sometimes includes one's personality and a little leeway is natural. This forum is the busiest, most crowded place. It's better for business that way as well. And with all the passion, even with the risk of sometimes getting carried away, I never saw a more close bunch of cyber friends and more caring. So, yeah Chaz!!!

I would like to say that THAT is one of the things I love about Chaz.

The mods really have a feel for when to step in or when to lock up a thread. I mean HELLO.....if a thread offends you, or you feel like you are fighting a losing battle.........LEAVE THAT THREAD. Don't click it back open, there is no one forcing you into a thread, and no one MAKING you respond to people who annoy you.

Sometimes a heated debate is good for the ticker :D and sometimes not so much............Here at Chaz, we have the freedom most of the time to decide for ourselves when enough is enough for us, SOME people need to learn when to exercise that freedom instead of waiting until they are so upset they want to leave the forum.

Ok, I'm done now ;)

I'm new to this forum, so please, bear with me.

I value freedom of speach. Passionate debates are fine as long as no one starts name-calling. That is, debate ideas or facts, don't debate someone's character. If someone's character is out of line for the forum, the mods can deal with that issue specifically. Most times, I've seen people handle it quite well amongst themselves.

I've known a few people with whom I disagree on some basic things but we are still friends because we don't call names.

To put it another way, you could tell me I'm flat out wrong and that's fine, because that's a difference of opinion or a statement of fact, in that I could be wrong. But if you were to call me names, well, that might be against forum rules but I just take the names and wear them as a badge of honor.:)

Any natural conversation will also include drift. The topic can morph or sidestep on a tangent related to the primary subject.

Maybe it's just me. It's hard to get my feelings hurt since I had them surgically removed years ago and I'm too old and tired to go and get some more put in.
