Serena's given you excellent advice. I'll add that there are many Doberman rescue organizations and that's a very worthwhile place to start.
If you really want a new puppy, a start in your seach for a breeder is to ask a veterinarian who has an excellent reputation. When Charlie raised European Dobermans years ago, he sold most of his puppies by referrals from his vet. It worked out well, since the vet didn't recommend the pups to anyone he wasn't confidant would be a responsible Doberman owner.

Really great advice!
As a long time dobie owner, it took me over six months to select my first one.
I even spent quality time with the parents, brothers, sisters, and grandmas,
before I picked the breeder and dog. I sure am glad I did as I selected the perfect fit.
Dobies are really strong, fast, and quick.. very quick... but they vary in personallity
depending on the bloodline and breeder.
