So I walk my neighbor's little Pomchi, Honey, and she absolutely loves it. But after the first ten or so walks, she started acting up. Whenever her owner gets her leash, Honey starts to growl in a very non-playful way and jump up on her. And she'd say something along the lines of "Cut it out!" you know. But of course that doesn't really work. So anyway, she'd hand me the leash but Honey would continue growling and barking and jumping up on her. And I'd call Honey over, and then she would start growling at me. And I'd either make a little high-pitched noise or say "No!" firmly, and she would cut it out and let me put the leash on her. And if she continued to growl, I would say "No!" again and she would stop for good. But as soon as the leash was on, she would be a little angel again. So my neighbor and I are working together to try to figure out what's going on with her (or us) to cause this behaviour, and how to understand and stop it. Can someone please fill me in?

Are you looming over her as you put the leash on? If so try kneeling, or bending over beside her.

No, I'm not. I usually kneel next to her.

I would have her checked with a vet to make sure there is no pain (not to say you are hurting her..but just to make sure she isn't fearing pain) Personally what I would do is to get my clicker out and train her to come to me and target her neck to my hand. But then I love no confrontational training :D

But why would she be feeling pain? She did have a back altercation a while ago, when she jumped off the back of the couch and landed wrong, but I can't remember if that was before or after she started acting up. And she never complains when I walk her... But I'll ask her owner about it.
