My wife and I recently adopted a 7 yr old female jack russell tarrier, i couldnt allow her to be put down being she was such a beutiful animal...
We have come across some semi serious behavior problems with her that I am unable to cure her of.
1: She humps arms, legs, hands, anything she can wrap her front legs around.
2: She chews on everything but the toys we bought her.
3: She is all over the place when I walk her, making me rethink a choke chain until i can gain some control over our walks. We live in the city, I can't have her doing whatever she wants..
We want to provide a good home for her, and she is a very sweet dog, but the misbehavior has got to go......
Any tips for curbing these little problems of hers so we can all be happy...

Hi and welcome to chaz. How long have you had her? I would think a little application of NILIF for a while would do great things. Do you know what the protocols for Nothing In Life Is Free are? Instead of a choke chain try a no pull harness (JRTs are notorious for still pulling and choking themsleves) When you develop a better relationship with her and do some training she should be good.
Where are you? Are there good dog classes in your area? If you PM me, or post your general location, we might beable to find someone in you area.

How old is she? Is she spayed?

Is she teething? How do you react when you catch her chewing on something? How long have you had her?

Has she ever been on a leash before? Are you currently using a choke chain? What kind of leash are you using?

Jack (Parson) Russell Terriers may look cute and they may be small, but they are working dogs. They thrive on farms, open land, and places where they can work. If you live in a city and purchased this dog because she was adorable--please realize that the reason she was in the shelter in the first place was because someone bought a cute puppy without realizing that small does not mean easy.
You have your work cut out with you. You need to keep your dog's mind occupied, exercise her as much as you possibly can, and get some obedience training. Have you thought about taking a class?

She's 7 yrs old. They adopted her from a kill shelter. She probably just has a bunch of energy that's cooped up inside that she needs to get out. That, and her previous owners probably didn't do much with her in the way of training.

lol
have you tried to punish her by putting her into the Crate when she does something wrong?
for good behavior you might want to reinforce her behavior by giving her treats.

Do not use the crate as punishment, as it will only teach her not to like the crate.

hmm worked for my other dog I had, so when she did something wrong she learned that its where she will go. you're right though, she didnt like it so she knew immediately not to repeat what she had done.

Which is ok I guess if that is all you plan to use the crate for. If you plan to use it for car rides, going to the vet, sleeping, potty training or putting the dog in when you are not around so he does not destroy the house then you will have some issues. If you do it to the point where he actually hates the crate then trying to force him in could get you bit. Plus he would be an anxious mess on a car ride. A lot of people think that is what a crate should be used for but it is supposed to be a safe place for the dog to go where he feels secure and you know he is safe.

my dog loved the crate when it rained and thundered. she would try to hide and the best spot would be the crate where i put a sheet over so it was dark
