I took Petie outside tonight for some off leash time here on our small farm.
Typically he gets very excited when he realizes that we are going out. He is expected to do any number of behaviours on request, like a sit/stay while I put a collar on him and get ready to go out. Then I open the door while he remains doing the desired behaviour etc. If it is night of free time to bomb around, like this evening once he is released, I also tell him 'Done', now he is on his own time and not mine.
Well tonight he went off at Mach 2, with me strolling along, he disappeared from my few because of some long grass beside the hedgerow. I was several hundred feet away when I saw my dog appear in hot pursuit of the neighbors cat!! And gaining (about 2 ft behind the cat) before I could respond the cat and Petie burst into a bunch of Chickens (neighbors also on my place lol). I called an 'Off' and watched as my Jrt did an immediate 180 degree turn and came flying back to me!! And of course he was rewarded hugely for it. I told him 'Done' again and he continued to race around and explore, we even ended up down in the area where the chickens continued to be. He never even glanced at them ( I guess the cat had decided to leave Dodge lol).
What a good boy, we had a nice walk (well I walked he raced everywhere lol), we ended up taking a rest at the top of the hill. Nice way to end the day, watching the sun set with your dog leaning against you getting so well earned attention.
Take care
