Worms

Lola has worms with decreased appetite but good water intake and very playful. what is the best wormer? They are very thin and white, 4-5 inches long. what do you recommend?:confused:

I recommend Panacure. It takes care of all worms - roundworms, hookworms and whipworms, so you don't have to worry that you didn't get them all. I don't know if you can get it at PetSmart or someplace like that. I get it from the vet, but it is non-prescription so you can probably get it at 1800petmeds too. It comes in powder form and you mix it with wet food or cottage cheese for 3 days, then give it again in 3 weeks.

I suggest bringing a fecal to your vet so they can prescribe some meds for you based on the type of worm she has..

I don't know much about worms but I thought that the vet deworms the dog when you go for a needle. Or do you wait for the worms to come before you give the pup medicine?

Pretty much all puppies have worms, so they should get meds automatically. Older dogs usually undergo a fecal exam first.

Usually when we get "new clients" -puppies or kittens the owner is to bring in a fecal sample for examination.
That way IF the dog or cat happen to have worms they can get treated before the symptoms start.

Usually its Interceptor that we suggest.

Thats also what Riot got given when he had hookworm as a puppy.

I don't know that all vets do this, but I just bought my puppy to the vet and she set her up to be bought back in to have this worm medicine squirted down her throat every 2 weeks for 5 times... When I got the pup about 3 weeks ago at 5 months of age, her medical records indicated she was only wormed once and the vet said that was not sufficient. Also only had one parvo shot and vet almost had a coronary!

Worm meds every 2 weeks for 5 times??? Are you getting charged for each of those visits? My vet gives me the meds to do at home and I only had to give them twice, then take a fecal exam back to make sure they were gone. I would be questioning this.

No, I am not being charged each time. I paid $25 (total)for worming and she has had 2 treatments so far... 3 to go. I am happy that they will do it, as she is 'wiggley' I am not sure I could get this stuff down her throat.

I once read that ALL puppies get round worms in their small intestines. They develop from roundworm larve in the mother's milk during nursing and from roundworm larvae that cross the placenta while the pup is still in the womb. Once I read that, I started to panic! Luckily our breeder is going to send us Sugars last medication soon. Did you guys know that?!

When they do a fecal exam on the dog (which they did by taking a sample right from her rectum) and it is negative for worms, they wouldn't still give worm treatments, would they? After they did the worm test they never did say if it was positive or negative, just that she needed this plan of 5 worming treatments 2 weeks apart. Seemed a little excessive to me, but I haven't dealt with puppy worms for years and years, so I didn't question it. Should I?
