Hello...

We just got our first puppy (8 weeks) on Saturday. I took him in the the vet on Monday, and he is fairly healthy. The only thing was that he's got coccidiosis, and a protrusion from his anal opening. It looks like a hemmorhoid, and when the vet tried to push it back in, it wouldn't stay.

Our vet said not to worry about it, as long as he is pooping, it isn't infected, and it isn't causing him pain. Because of the vascularity of that area, he wants to avoid surgery for now.

Well, Brutus poops just fine. It doesn't look infected. But I'm wondering if it's bothering him because this morning I noticed he's started dragging his bottom on the ground, and he's attempting to lick/bite that area.

Is this normal for dogs? Would you take that behavior as maybe it's bothering him? Anyone have experience with something similar?

This is the first time we've ever had a puppy this little, it's rather like bringing home a baby for the first time!

Thanks in advance for any info!

Can you take a picture and post it? I'm having a hard time picturing what it could be.

And if he's started bum scooting and licking/chewing at it I'd say it's bothering him so I'd give the vet a call.

That doesn't look normal, I would want a second opinion in vets.
As he ages it might affect him more and more..

one of my foster kittens had this, it's something like a prolapsed anus.

She did grow out of it. it could be irritation from the coccidiosis, he probably has been "going" quite a bit.

I would ask for a second opinion tho,,just my experience with this above certainly doesn't apply to all.

I agree with Jynx. I have seen this twice in cats. Normally they outgrow it, but it isn't comfortable, can itch and burn similar to a 'roid. But I'm not so sure the same applies to dogs, so it's best to make sure a vet is being accurate.
