im on this site at the moment ( http://www.awlqld.com.au ) and it has a list of the pets that have been brought in, and why they were surendered. Ppl are givingup their pets for things like, jumping the fence, digging, missing the tray, crying at night, unsuitable with chickens, owners were moving (all dog breefds are allowed every state in Aus), most of these are training problems and can be fixed, GOD IT MAKES ME SO MAD!!!

Ya, no kidding...I saw a Great Dane (Harelquin[sp?]) that was 9yrs old in at a shelter and she was relenquished because she "dug holes in the yard". I mean man, you'd think people'd have more respect for their companions! Maybe she was bored or hot or something!
It really irked me when a Min Pin came into a shelter because he was "too hyper". I mean, it is a Min Pin for crying out loud! What did you expect!

yeah, our dog sophie once dug about 2 meatres in under the cemebnt downstairs. but hey, what are you gonna do?

*sigh* all because some stupid owners didn't research the breed before they went out and got it...I think the excuse that really made my blood boil was for a 6yr old chow..."The kids are bored with her, so we're getting rid of her." OMG!! Dogs aren't toys you idoits!! :mad: They are meant to be with you for life! Not just as soon as you get tired of them you kick them out! :mad:

Here is a similar post that I came across on a GSD rescue forum (sorry it's so long, but some of the reasons listed are so ridiculous, the sad thing is they're ALL 'real' ones people have used).

Just wanted to add the saddest excuse I've ever heard. As we were leaving our shelter the other day, this guy (older man, actually) was at the counter turning an animal in. His reason was "it's just a miserable animal".... Ok, guess what kind of animal it was... Not a cat, not a dog, it was a little budgie bird in a cage...

She's aggressive. She didn't used to mind it when my son pulled her around by her lip, but now that she's bigger she's started snapping at him


I found him in the kitchen (not doing anything - he just walked in there)


My friend gave up his beagle because his fiancée said that when they had kids SOMEDAY the kids would have an increased chance of developing asthma if there was a dog in the house. They broke up several months later and my friend was broken hearted because he had given away the dog for nothing.

I took in a rescue dog. Their reason of getting rid of it, it bit the kids. They pulled the dog's teeth out with pliers. I was so mad at them!!!! The dog is now in a very loving home, where she gets the love she deserves. Thankfully, those other people can no longer own a pet.


I have a 2 year old Siamese who insists on sleeping with my son...up by his head. When my son isn't home she steals his socks and curls up with them and uses them as her pillow. She is altogether too attached to my son and I won't stand for it!


When we let her out of her crate twice a day-she jumps on us and expects too much attention.


Because I got caught in between a cat and a dog and the cat was small and the dog was big so I gave away the dog page. And also it had to many words that I had no Idea what they said so thats why I gave it away. Oh! Did I mention a pro wrestler said that he would kick my butt in to the middle of the next generation if I didn't!

Our fourth cousins who visit once every five years can't stand him.

This is a woman I know and her dogs she got rid of and the one she has now-- 1-a poodle--New husband won't let me have her--had 4 years. 2-Yorkie--no time to take care of it--had 5 years 3-Shar-pei-4 years old-still have him but trying to give him away because the neighbors are complaining about him hanging out on their porches.

I live outside of Portland, OR and I just heard on the radio today that a nearby shelter has recieved 180 animals since Friday! That's 180 animals in 4 days. That is sick and people should be ashamed of themselves. I don't understand why people abandon their pets. :mad: Now the shelter can't house or feed all of them and they are begging for donations and for people to come adopt. So sad. :(

Some people are just plain stupid. But there are some things that are good reasons. Where I live,if your dog attacks a chicken or chases a cow it is as good as dead. It is nicer for the person to give it up than to just let it get shot by someone. You can say you are going to train all you want but it only takes one time and they are gone.

I still think people rarely research their breeds though.when they get angry because there herding breed is nippy,or that a husky sheds or howls. And I can't count the number of times I've heard people say "as soon as we get rid of this dog we are getting a puppy". Don't they realize that the puppy will soon be an adult too!

and if you want a dog to keep the kids entertained then why get a chow thhat doesnt really care about ppl, chows are like cats, just another case were owners didnt ressearch the breeds.

I hate people that get dogs, expect them to automatically know all commands, and to be the perfect little angel every single second of the day. If they find a strand of hair on the couch, they freak out and scream at the dog....before you know it, the dog is in a shelter kennel....soon, being euthanized.

its SO horrible, how people can do that, and they dont ressearch the breed, its like saying, my husky wont stop pulling the sled, what do they expect, really, whatever they get bred for is in them and if it isnt going to suit your lifestyle, do the pet a favour, dont get one

We live in a disposable world and some people take that into the Pet world, it is just sad. That is why I believe you should have to take classes or obtain a license to allow you to buy a dog.

Even when you do research a breed, though, you frequently see only good things about them. Herding breeds are never called nippy in books, for example. If you read between the lines of the average, blandly positive general breed book and think about what herding entails, of course, you might realize the potential for nipping is there. But it's a bit hard on the average person who just wants to own a dog to have to research the job description of 180+ breeds. I think the Border Collie people have done a commendable job of spreading the word about the drawbacks of their breed - at least, what would be drawbacks in a casual, average home. Other breeds need to receive the same vigorously honest scrutiny coupled with PR efforts to reach people who don't go to dog shows. It wouldn't prevent all bad choices, but it would be a help for the average person who wants to make a smart choice without devoting six months of research to the chore. I stress average, though even the most fanatical dog lover has succumbed to the need to OWN A DOG RIGHT NOW.

yes. but on the net these days there are many "quizzes" that show what dog suits your lifestyle, this narrows down the choices a bit and allows you to choose carefully. And if someone really needs a dog that bad, then the research should be done on the breed you decided on or... you learn to live with it, for instance, Sophie is big, lazy, smelly and drooly, her spit makes you itch and she wrecks all the gardens, we didnt know this when we bought her but we love her and will live with it.

yeah, we have over looked tonnes of nice homes because they dont suit our pets, We were going to loose our rabbits but I dont think I could gove them away now

I was washing one of the dogs at the shelter (I'm a volunteer and I do bath brigade) and the dog was really old.....like 11 yrs old. It was this big mix dog. The owners said a newfoundland mix. Anyways it was a really sweet dog and I was talking to one of the people that worked there and she said that he was a real sweetheart and she was hoping someone adopts him because the lady that owned him was an elderly lady that couldn't afford to live on her own and when she moved in with her relatives they wouldn't let her keep the dog. The lady was heartbroken about having to give the dog up and the realative (her son) refused to let the dogs stay.

I know that isn't a *worst excuse to give up a dog* kind of thing, but I thought it was wrong of the son to do that and I felt bad for the lady. Sometimes the owners really have no choice.

Baby was "too difficult to take care of" yeah right, she was owned by a girl that went off to school and her parents didn't want to deal w/ her. I don't know if it was the girl or the parents but she was definitly hit and is affraid of a pin brush. Plus it took us a yr to teach her how to play and she still doen't really play like a normal dog but she's learing.
We get dogs into a rescue for so many stupid reasons. I'm always saying that I wish certain people could be banned from getting dogs, either b/c of how they treated a dog or giving them up for stupid reasons. I can understand that sometimes it isn't right for either the owner or the dog or some REAL reason but if people just took the time and effort and commitment then there might be a few dogs but finding them homes would be easy. Instead we have so many ddogs that we can't even save and trying to choose who lives and who doesn't is so hard (we rescue from a high kill shelter). URGH it just gets me so mad. Sorry I just had to vent.
