Hi my little 10 week old yorkie-poo pup was stepped on by my year and a half old bordiecollie/shep mix. He was knocked out and spent the night at the vets. The vet told me to come pick him up because he was now alert and doing well... ( i was sooooo releived!!!) But now he is still a bit unbalanced and doesn't seem to have much strength as he used to. He had just learned to climb the stairs but now he won't..... do you think this will pass? maybe he just needs more time to heal? the vet said just let him rest... but to report any abnormal behaviour... is this abnormal????

I don't think that's abnormal for a head trauma like that, though I do not claim to be an expert! ;) I'd expect your puppy to be sore and a little off balance for at least a couple of days. Ex. if there's swelling it'll need a couple days to go down. When they are young like this, they tend to bounce back easier than older dogs, so just keep an eye on him like your vet said. If you're concerned, give your vet a call - they should be able to give you some advice over the phone. . .
I wish you and your puppy good luck that the injury is not too serious and he feels better soon :)
Welcome to Chazhound, btw :D

Such a shame !!! I would think if he was knocked out , there could be some brain swelling ....watch closely . Keep us posted !

well I just got back from my lunch, luckily i get to go home for an hour and a half to hang with my doggies... Baxter seems to be in such good spirits today! He even jumped up the step to come inside!!! I was so happy :) He still wobbles but not as much as yesterday... now the weird thing he is doing is that whenever I leave his sight he cries at the top of his lungs. Mostly when he can't get to me (like upstairs) but when I was in the shower this morning he cried like it was the end of the world... and he was in the bathroom with me! He kept trying to jump up into the shower!!??!! Should I be worried about anxiety issues now? He was sooo idependent before this accident!

I think so... he doesn't run into anything... his eyes still have that puppy cloudyness to them though...
ouch,,poor puppy..I had this happen to a kitten I was fostering,,I had the whole litter actually,,had them babygated in a bathroom, showing people, they were around 3.5 wks old,,one was climbing the gate, I asked the girl standing there to grab her, she did and proceeded to DROP her on her head!!!
I was like "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" she then tells me she is afraid of cats YIKES...well she seemed ok at the moment, but the next morning, she was clearly almost dead, shaking, going/into shock..I rushed her to the vet, they kept hydrating her, wasn't bringing her around, I left her there, after a few hours, she started coming around, altho she was blind!!!! Thank god it was only temporary, I ended up keeping her and her litter sister, she is otherwise, a pretty normal cat, except she does do a lot of head bobbing off and on *vbg*,,we call her "bobble head" ...
Hopefully and it sounds like your puppy is snapping out of it as well.

How did you react when the original incident happened?
Sometimes, when animals get hurt, we may over react in an emotional way and the animal picks up on this. He may be trying to recreate the emotional type of reaction you had originally by acting this way.
Were you matter of fact about it after the incident or did you "baby" him when it happened?

he definitely got babied... but he's just a baby! I can't help myself... he's such a big whiner now, its getting pretty annoying.. maybe I should stop picking him up every time he reacts this way... hes so god **** cuddley though!!

update: Baxter is back to his old self again!! Seems like he's made a full recovery!! Even his whining has lessened! And he's back going up and down the stairs :) He's still a pee machine...
